The Pasturage LLC of Montague
It’s tomato season! And we have plenty of bacon. You know what that means!! BLT’s! We only bring a couple of pounds of bacon, so the best way to ensure good summer eating is to pre-order. Also, we are sold out of nitrate-free ham slices. We still have plenty of regular ham slices for cold ham-barley-basil salad. It’s delicious on those summer evenings.
New! A reminder to all that I am now able to swipe your EBT card! We are only allowed have one reader per subscription, so if you know in advance that you would like to use your card, let me know so I can bring the device with me from the other market. If not, we’ll figure something out. Tell your friends! And a quick shout out to Joan: I have your lamb hearts for you!
Isn’t summer eating splendid?!

Monday Market Preorder Newsletter

-Pre-Orders, Pre-Orders, Pre-Orders. A reminder about the value of the pre-order: 1. It’s SO important to help our farmers keep their costs down right now, and 2. It helps you get the products you need!
Even though we all enjoy hanging out at the farmers markets in the summer, please remember our farmers, bakers & food medicine makers are all working hard in this heat. Taking the time & effort to put in a preorder helps them tremendously!

Deadlines to remember: Laughing Tree Bakery needs your orders by Tuesday 6pm. Dark Waters Coffee Roasters are trying out a week of shipping orders instead of bringing them to market, and their deadline is Wednesday noon.

Everyone else is accepting preorders all week up until Friday, so give them a look and please take the time to order!

Today’s Soapbox Special: For those of you who have been in the good food movement for awhile,  this conversation between an organic farmer/founder of REAL ORGANIC PROJECT & founder of Cornucopia & ORGANIC EYE, about the current state of certified organic and attempts to rescue it from BIG AG/ORG will have you nodding in agreement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr3KrIrpyIk&t=4232s

See you Saturday at the Market!

Vendors Attending Saturday August 6th:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are again offering our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain a combination of some of the following: kale, chard, head lettuce, mini cabbage, green peppers, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, parsley, sweet onions, and fresh garlic. Again, each bag will cost $15.
To order your Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We also plan to have many items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
The challenges this growing season have included the long dry spell we had, constant fox pressure, and exhaustion from family, work, and farm responsibilities. This past week we faced a new issue; we were upset to receive a call that someone was scammed by people using our farm name and address. Please beware! They did not use our personal names, and because we only accept cash/checks for payment the scam didn’t succeed. Also because most, if not all our customers follow the KNOW YOUR FARMER credo!
We will accept orders until 5pm on Friday. If you miss the deadline or prefer to shop in person, I bring a selection of what’s available every Saturday. I will plan to get totals emailed out by 9:30pm.  If you don’t get a response from me, please contact me. We accept cash or check payable to Pine Row Farm.

Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.
Monday Market Preorder Newsletter-This week Woven Farmstead is asking for preorders by 7am Friday as her husband Jay will be taking over for Viki, who is attending a photo show. She will still have some items available for walk up sales Saturday but if you really want the good stuff, order now!
-Blackbird Farms is also asking for preorders for their pre-packed $15 bags of fresh farm veggies…and the good stuff is starting to roll in on their farm as well! Not that it’s not all good stuff, but when the cukes, squash, garlic & peppers start coming – yay!
-Please be sure to get your bread orders in to Laughing Tree by 6pm Tuesday! They always have a good selection of extra breads & pastries for non-preorders but if you take a look at their list of things available for preorder you will find a lot more!
-Chicken, Beef, Pork & Lamb: Scholl Farm, Pine Row Farm & The Pasturage would all encourage you to preorder for the best selections!
-Dark Water Coffee needs preorders by Wednesday for roasting preference. They had cups of their newest grind CRUZ last Saturday and it was delicious!

Today’s Soapbox Special: Glyphosate (aka Roundup) is banned in 32 countries, but not here. You won’t find it in the products raised by our farmers. Here’s why: Sweetwater Pledge to Customers

See you Saturday at the Market!

Vendors Attending Saturday July 30th:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are again offering our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain a combination of some of the following: kale, head lettuce, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, scallions, parsley, basil, and fresh garlic.

Monday Market Preorder Newsletter

-Please be sure to get your bread orders in to Laughing Tree by 6pm Tuesday! They always have a good selection of extra breads & pastries but if you take a look at their list of things available for preorder you will find a lot more!
-Big news for fruit lovers from Samantha at The Woven Farm – read her update to find out more!
-Dark Water Coffee Roasters would appreciate preorders!

-Today’s Soapbox Special (aka: yet one more reason to eat local). Did you know that CAFO raised beef cattle are fed poultry litter (chicken manure?) Here’s a link from Missouri University Extension Service https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g2077
Beef cattle have the ability to digest low-cost feedstuffs that are not usable by other livestock species. One such feedstuff is poultry litter, which provides opportunities for both the poultry producer and the beef cattle producer. The large quantities of litter produced during modern poultry production are expensive to dispose of safely; moreover, protein is typically the most expensive ingredient in ruminant diets. Feeding poultry litter is a means of disposing of a waste product while concurrently supplying a low-cost protein feed to beef cattle.”

At Sweetwater you will find ONLY meats from small flock, pasture raised animals – viva the local difference!

See you Saturday at the Market!

Sweetwater Friday Update for Saturday July 16th Farmers Market

Sweetwater Local Foods Market

Saturday, July 16th 2022
10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.
Friday Market Update Newsletter
Is there anything more summery than summer squash? Besides grilling and sliced raw into salads, how do you best enjoy this golden goodness?

Learning to enjoy new parts of our common veggies can be fun! I made a delicious carrot top pesto last week, with a little added basil, garlic, walnuts, parm & EVOO – it was delicious! A friend from work told me she makes kohlrabi chips from the leaves, same as kale chips but very light & crispy!

Blackbird Farm & Woven Farm will both have lots of summer squash so be sure to get some! And Earthscape Farm will have kohlrabi & snow peas along with their meats. (meat cuts should be preordered if possible).

On a more serious note, we’re as concerned as everyone else about the price of food these days, particularly meat. Just FYI, our farmers have kept their meat prices down in spite of rising costs on their ends, so not only is ordering from them more economical for you, it also supports our local food economy (instead of the 2 or 3 huge meat conglomerates selling most of what is in the supermarkets). Most importantly, locally raised pastured animals are SO much healthier for you! You can rest assured all the animal products sold at Sweetwater are from small flocks enjoying grassy pastures this time of year, not crowded into buildings & pens and crammed full of antibiotics…….it’s a WIN WIN!
Earthscape Farm & Pine Row Farm will both have a limited amount of beef cuts available for walk up sales, so please consider getting a preorder in ahead of Saturday, it assures you will get the precise cuts you want, as our farmers can’t possibly haul everything they have down to you.
Okay, off the soapbox we go, and we’ll see you at the market!

Vendors Attending Saturday July 16th:

Vendors Attending Saturday July 16th:

Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
This week at market, we are again offering our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, chard, lettuce, mini-cabbages, kohlrabi, salad turnips, summer squash, zucchini, scallions, and garlic scapes.

See you Saturday at the Market!

Vendors Attending Saturday July 9th:

Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, chard, lettuce, radishes, baby fennel, kohlrabi, scallions, and garlic scapes.
