Sweetwater Local Foods Market

Mercy Health Lakes Campus
On 6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd. Exit. 1st Bldg North of Pontaluna Rd.
We are a Bridge Card Market!

New website is up! http://www.sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org/

Attending this week’s market:

Shady Side Farm of Holland
We have begun harvesting our certified organic dry beans this week, and we are excited that we may be able to bring back some old friends to you this Saturday. Stop by our stall and ask what’s new.

Sale! To clear out the old, we are discounting all last year’s beans. We will have the following available at $2 off per pound: Black Valentine, Hutterite Soup, and Jacob’s Cattle. We have the following at $1 off per pound: Black Turtle and Pinto.

If money is tight, now would be a great time to contact us about stocking up on last year’s beans. They are still wonderfully nutritious and delicious beans. Bulk purchasing (5, 10, and 25 lb. bags) through pre-orders is available for Jacob’s Cattle and Black Turtle. Email us at shadysidefarmmichigan@gmail.com before Friday noon, please.

We will have Grassfields Farms cheese (from the Meermans in Coopersville) along in several varieties, including the wonderful new Smoked Gouda. They are sold out of Edam and Aged Cheddar for a few months, so if you particularly like these varieties, stop by the stall and snatch up the last one or two I have in my stock.

Finally, we have lambs that are ready for your freezer. They are grass-fed, and this year we were able to raise them without the use of any medications. Stop at the stall and ask me for a Freezer Lamb Fact Sheet.

Next week we will not be at market, so please stock up on what you need for the next two weeks.

Little Red Organics of Freesoil
Fall is contraction – gathering things scattered in the rush, collecting and inventorying. Time to get the farm – and ourselves – ready for the quieter parts of the year. This week we’ve been busy cleaning onions, shallots and garlic to store. We’re waiting and watching as our cauliflower, Napa and storage cabbages are heading up .. We’ve also been getting the ground ready for a long winter’s nap – rolling in drip lines and tilling and mowing to keep our spring weeds to a minimum.

Best,
Kate, John & Laila

Little Red Organics of Freesoil
Tis the season for putting veggies away for the winter.  Things on the farm have slowed down enough that we’re packing our Mason jars and freezer bags.  There is a new to us method of freezing veggies without blanching.  It works if you plan on using the frozen goodies within twelve months of freezing, otherwise blanching is necessary.  We have tried it successfully with shelling peas and beans so far. . . it is a real time saver.
We have tons of stuff for bulk freezing and canning (see below).  A number of things will continue in bulk, but tomatoes are headed out quickly.  We have everything but limes for making 99.9% local salsa & dilly beans!
Best,
Kate, John & Laila

Shady Side Farm of Holland
This week I will have along our certified organic beans, all harvested last fall, in the following varieties:
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture. We’ve got a lot of these beans left, so they are discounted $1 a pound while supplies last.
Black Valentine – Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips.
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Jacob’s Cattle – Big and meaty, taste & texture of new potatoes, traditional baked beans, chili. We’ve got a lot of these beans left, so they are discounted $2 a pound while supplies last.
Marrow – (Almost gone) Plump, soft white beans that soak up the flavors of whatever you cook them with.
October – (Almost gone) Creamy, velvety smooth texture, nutty, sweet flavor, thin skin, soups or chili.
Painted Lady – (Almost gone) Slightly sweet bean, smooth, creamy texture, good in everything.
Pinto – (Almost gone) Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
Zebra – (Almost gone) Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.

Please let us know ahead of time if you’d like to order 5# bags of any one variety, so that we can pre-bag those and bring them along.

In addition, we offer Grassfield Farms organic raw aged cheeses in the following flavors:
NEW! Smoked Gouda – I’ll have samples along. It’s amazing!
Aged Cheddar – You asked, and we listened! A sharp cheddar, aged a year. Award-winning!
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet.
Crofters – This delicious cheese is aged 1 year with a medium sharp taste. The texture is dry and crumbly. Very similar to Parmesan.
Edam – A variety of Gouda made with skim milk: Elastic, yet firm, this flawless low fat cheese is our best melter, improving any dish.
Garlic & Onion – The most aromatic of herbs. Don’t be the only one in the room to eat this spiced Gouda or you soon will be.
Gouda – A traditional handmade cheese in keeping with West Michigan’s (and our family’s) Dutch culture.
Lamont Cheddar – A rare, natural rind English cheese, named for the Grand River’s first settlement near our farm.

The Roaring Mouse of Hart
This cooler weather is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee or tea! Either way you like it, we have you covered! Every week we have 4-6 varieties of freshly roasted coffee, and 5+ varieties of loose leaf tea. We also have some amazing fair-trade organic chocolate barks, and chocolate covered coffee beans! We can only bring a few varieties of our chocolates to the market each week, so be sure to check out our list on Facebook and pre-order if there is something specific you want.

We are not planning to attend market on Saturday Sept 5 for Labor Day Weekend, so stock up this week!

Featured coffee of the week! This week we are featuring our Guatemala Antigua FTO. This is a delicious light-medium roast, with a full creamy body, and a mild acidity. The aroma is floral, and the flavor is complex, with layers of baking spices like cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.

We will also plan to bring our Ethiopia Amaro Gayo, Guatemala FTO, Papua New Guinea FTO, Colombia FTO, and Sumatra Decaf.

As always, we sell our coffee by the ounce so you can get the perfect amount to use while it is the freshest. We also have gift certificates; the perfect gift for a coffee lover!
Come taste the fresh difference! Coffee is seasonal, so expect some variety. We try not to roast too much extra in order to keep the coffee fresh every week.

Our list has gotten too long to include here, so check out our Facebook page for the full list of what we have available.

Email us to order in advance, and we will have it bagged up and ready for you. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get there, and speed up your shopping if you are in a hurry!

Bonao Cacao of Muskegon
This Bonao cacao is raw, organic and carefully hand picked to insure premium quality. The farm located in the Dominican Republic uses earth friendly practices and even holds “The cacao experience” where people can come see the farm, learn and have fun participating in the farming! Cocoa comes from the cacao tree and then is roasted and processed to make the powder and chocolates everyone loves. However, during this process many of the nutrients and antioxidants are lost. Cacao is the same as cocoa but in a raw form, allowing the beans to stay in it’s natural state to give you the best benefits possible. Come check us out this Saturday for a sample of the bean itself and to learn more! We have beans, powder, nibs, butter and tasty healthy chocolates! We look forward to seeing everybody Saturday!

Meadow View Goat Dairy of Fremont
We’ll be bringing our Sweet Corn, Incredible, and usual assortment of fresh and aged Chevre’s this Saturday!
Chevreʹ  Fresh chevre with a nice spreading consistency, perfect for sandwich toppings and cooking. Cherry Capital Foods of Traverse City says  ” The chèvre produced by Meadow View has a pitch perfect acidity on the palate that becomes gently sweet and milky with a grassy note on the finish.”
Seasoned Chevreʹ
Our fresh Chevre available in your favorite flavorings: Blueberry Vanilla (great on a morning bagel!) Hickory-smoked bacon Bits, Garlic, Italian Herb, & Hot Pepper
Feta
A smooth and creamy feta which is low in salt and rich in fresh goat milk flavor. The brining process gives feta cheese a salty, tangy flavor and a crumbly consistency. Feta cheese can be served as a table cheese, used in baking savory dishes, or served as an appetizer or in salads. The classic Greek salad is made with Feta cheese. In crumbles or cubes for easy slicing.
Tomme de Fremont
Our first aged cheese is quickly becoming a customer favorite! Developed from a French recipe, Tomme is a lower fat mold ripened cheese, aged at least 60 days. This gives the cheese a stronger flavor & firmer texture than the fresh Chevres, perfect for slicing.
Dutch Kase
A Meadow View Dairy original! If you are looking for a nicely aged but milder version of our Tomme, this is the cheese for you. Vacuum sealed without mold and aged at least 60 days.
Marco Similar to Dutch Kase but pasteurized and vacuum sealed, it comes in Pepper, Sage, Italian & Garlic.

The Roaring Mouse of Hart
New coffee and a new display! We were busy on our week off, and made some changes to our display. Also we have new coffees from Guatemala, Colombia, and Ethiopia.
We are still working on our teas. This week we will have the same black and green teas available. Hopefully soon we will be adding more.
Come by to learn how to brew better coffee using the French Press or a pour-over cone. We have both for sale, as well as filters for the cone. This week we will also be showcasing the Aeropress!
Come and get a fresh brewed-to-order cup of our freshly roasted coffee! Get a ceramic cup to enjoy at the market for $1 or a to-go cup for $3.
As always, we sell our coffee by the ounce so you can get the perfect amount to use while it is the freshest. We also have gift certificates; the perfect gift for a coffee lover!
In the roaster this week:
New! Colombia FTO – Similar in taste to the Guatemala, but with more of a brown sugar and honey sweetness, and less of the chocolate.
New! Guatemala FTO – A deliciously sweet, low acid replacement for our Peru. Milk chocolate and caramel notes, with a full body. Roasted to a medium level, this coffee is great with or without milk.
New! Ethiopia Amaro Gayo Org. – A deliciously fruity light roast, this coffee has notes of strawberry and brown sugar. The aroma reminds me of fresh strawberry pie! This coffee is grown, harvested, processed, and exported by Ethiopia’s only female miller/exporter Asnakech Thomas. She is dedicated to improving the quality of life of women and children in the area, and is working toward building a hospital. She is also dedicated to producing the highest quality organic coffee.
Papua New Guinea FTO – Low acid, with notes of caramel and nuts. A good, strong medium-dark roast.
Decaffeinated Peru FTO – rich and sweet, with chocolate and caramel notes. A very delicious decaf! This coffee was decaffeinated using the Mountain Water Process. It is a natural, chemical free process which allows the bean to retain much of its unique flavor.
Come taste the fresh difference!
Call or text (231)742-0229 or email titus@theroaringmouse.com to order in advance, and we will have it bagged up and ready for you. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get some!

Bloom Ferments of Grand Rapids
Our Kombucha is a slightly sweet, effervescent, probiotic fermented tea using only fair trade and organic ingredients. Slightly sweeter than most commercial brands, Bloom kombucha has a more inviting taste and is enjoyed by long-time kombucha drinkers and people new to kombucha.
Check out our newest flavor:  Negroni Kombucha– a blood orange, juniper berry kombucha. We will be selling it in 64oz growlers for $20, 9oz cups for $2.50, or you can bring your own container and we will charge based on how many ounces. We also have our starter kits, containing the scoby, starter tea and a 1 gallon jar with directions on how to brew it.
To learn more about the company and its products, visit www.bloomferments.com and click on the FAQ tab. Jordan Michalsky will represent us at Sweetwater, and she will also bring a variety of shirts from her Happy Ferments Apparel company.

Cultured Love of Grand Rapids
Cultured Love is “making good food possible”, producing probiotic-laden, nutritious foods that are not only beneficial for you, but also add amazing flavor, texture, and beauty to any meal.
New Flavors!! This week we add 2 new flavors to our lineup! — Curryosity and Root for Ginger. Both flavors received really favorable responses last week without any official announcement, and we’re excited to “officially” announce their availability.  (Note: The new labels include the phrase “100% Organic Kraut”, so we’ve added a small button to the “old” flavors to make it clear that they too are 100% Organic…)
Ingredients:
Curryosity – Cabbage, Salt, Carrot, Green Onion, Curry, Cumin, Paprika
Root for Ginger – Cabbage, Salt, Carrot, Radish, Garlic, Red Pepper Flakes
Add those to our current lineup of specialty kraut products — traditional sauerkraut with caraway, dill kraut, and spicy kraut — are naturally fermented and nutritious, hand-crafted in Grand Rapids.

Attending this week’s market:

New Vendor!
Little Red Organics of Freesoil
Sweetwater welcomes John Ferree & Kate Leitz, experienced organic growers that specialize in high quality, consistent products.  Kate has worked at farms from the western slope of Colorado to Vermont, and John started his own farm in central Indiana in 2004 after interning in Urbana, Illinois.  They moved to Michigan when farming opportunities in Indiana came to a close, seeking a new market with affordable land prices.  (Ground in central Indiana has increased from
4500$/acre to 8-9000$ an acre for ag value since 2008.)  They have since made their home in
Free Soil, and are currently producing vegetables on two acres with a small hoophouse for warm early season crops.

Bloom Ferments of Grand Rapids
Bloom Ferments is proud to be Grand Rapids’ first kombucha company. Kombucha is a slightly sweet, effervescent, fermented tea. Kombucha is also probiotic. Bloom produces high-quality kombucha using only fair trade and organic ingredients. Slightly sweeter than most commercial brands, Bloom kombucha has a more inviting taste and is enjoyed by long-time kombucha drinkers and people new to kombucha.

Our current lineup of specialty kraut products — traditional sauerkraut with caraway, dill kraut, and spicy kraut — are naturally fermented and nutritious, hand-crafted in Grand Rapids.

Laughing Tree Bakery of Hart
Greetings from Laughing Tree Brick Oven Bakery—
Cobmoosa Onion Rye is back in the lineup this week—a scrumptious loaf made with caramelized Michigan onions and just a bit of caraway.  The perfect loaf for a reuben or a tuna (or white fish!) sandwich.
Our plan with cookies for the summer is to bake our Hilltopper Cookies (ginger molasses cookies) every week as well as two other varieties.  We will simply alternate our other four varieties (two each week).  This week brings our hefty Treehuggers (a vegan peanut butter cookie made with local honey and maple syrup) and our Expedition Cookies (almost more a granola bar than a cookie… with oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, raisins, chocolate chips, dates—all organic).  These were our two original cookies when we began back in 2010, and we still love them!
We are honored to bake for you and your family!  Because small good things matter.

Bloom Started was in 2012 by Emily Helmus. With careful tests on each and every batch, Bloom confirms that their kombucha is full of live, healthy probiotics, and additionally contains only a trace amount of alcohol making it completely safe for kids and those who choose not to consume alcohol of any kind. Shady Side Farm of Holland
This week we will be at market with our certified organic beans, all harvested last fall, in the following varieties:
Bean Medley – A mixture of all our beans that is great for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Black Valentine – Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips.
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Jacob’s Cattle – Big and meaty, taste & texture of new potatoes, traditional baked beans, chili.
Jacob’s Cattle Gold – (Almost gone) Hold shape w/ long cooking, soak up other flavors well, soups and stews.
Marrow – We cleaned beans for planting, and have a few extra Marrows! Creamy bean, good in soups and baked beans.
October – (Almost gone) Creamy, velvety smooth texture, nutty, sweet flavor, thin skin, soups or chili.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet bean, smooth, creamy texture, good in everything.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean
Please let us know ahead of time if you’d like to order 5# bags of any one variety, so that we can pre-bag those and bring them along.

We will have our certified organic non-GMO corn along in two different options:
Whole corn (for making masa) – 2# bags. If you want corn in larger amounts than just 2#, please email me. We will have the little packets of lime necessary for making the masa, as well.
Freshly-ground corn meal – 2# bagsWe took our whole corn down to Windmill Island in Holland and had them grind corn meal for us. This stoneground meal is fresh, fresh, fresh–what I will have along to market Saturday is the second batch!

In addition, we will have Grassfield Farms organic raw aged cheeses along in the following flavors:
Aged Cheddar – You asked, and we listened! A sharp cheddar, aged a year. Award-winning!
Chili – Gouda with Red Chili flakes, this mild and creamy cheese has delightful spice without being too hot.
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet.
Crofters – This delicious cheese is aged 1 year with a medium sharp taste. The texture is dry and crumbly. Very similar to Parmesan.
Leyden – Originally from the Rhine Valley, now the Grand River Valley; cumin perfectly compliments this aged Dutch cheese.
Cheese Sticks – Want to try some cheese, but don’t need a whole 8 ounces? We’ll have a few cheese sticks along each week, in a variety of cheese types, for $2 each.

The Roaring Mouse of Hart
Summer is here! We are hoping to start offering iced coffee and tea as well as our hot brews!
Tea lovers! Come check out our new loose leaf teas!
Coffee lovers! Come get a cup of freshly brewed pour-over coffee. Fill a ceramic mug to enjoy as you shop for $1, or get a to-go cup to keep you going through the morning for $3.

In the roaster this week:
New! Papua New Guinea FTO – Low acid, rustic flavor, a great Island coffee!
Peru La Florida FTO –  Sweet, with notes of chocolate and caramel.
Almost gone! Ethiopia Sidama FTO – a complex cup with berry notes and a sweet finish. This is one of our favorites!

Coffee is seasonal, so expect my varieties to change over the next couple weeks as new coffees come in. We try not to roast too much extra in order to keep the coffee fresh every week. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get some!

ASPARAGUS! We will be at market with our Certified Organic Asparagus!

Meadow View Goat Dairy of Fremont
Cherry Vanilla Chevre is our newest addition to our spreadable Chevres. We think you’ll like this one, especially good on a morning bagel!
Other items from our farm:
We’ll also have eggs from our free-range, GMO-free flock.
Note: We will be attending market the last Saturday of every month.

Cultured Love is “making good food possible”, producing probiotic-laden, nutritious foods that are not only beneficial for you, but also add amazing flavor, texture, and beauty to any meal. Our current lineup of specialty kraut products — traditional sauerkraut with caraway, dill kraut, and spicy kraut — are naturally fermented and nutritious, hand-crafted in Grand Rapids. We started producing and selling our products out of the Downtown Market Incubator Kitchen in GR in September 2014.

Cultured Love is driven by a desire to spread the idea that “food is medicine”, that what we eat has a significant impact on our overall well-being, our psychology, our digestion, our ability to fight disease. This mission has grown out of years of experience dealing with chronic disease in our family, seeking alternatives to standard American diets that are increasingly devoid of nutrition, and over-reliance on standard western healthcare which often provides medical responses to health and disease that don’t always address the root cause.

We hand seeded all our own plants in our homemade potting soil.   They are grown on 100% sunshine (no grow lights), well water, nutrient rich potting soil and LOVE. (plants thrive on good vibes!)
Our plants are seeded in ryhthym with biodynamic planting.  Our greenhouse is heated with solar gain and wood that Mike cuts, making a incredibly healthy start for our plants.

Jacob’s Cattle Gold – Hold shape w/ long cooking, soak up other flavors well, soups and stews.
Marrow! – We cleaned beans for planting, and have extra Marrows! Creamy bean, good in soups and baked beans.
October – Creamy, velvety smooth texture, nutty, sweet flavor, thin skin, soups or chili.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet bean, smooth, creamy texture, good in everything.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
Zebra! – We cleaned beans for planting, and have extra Zebras! Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean
Please let us know ahead of time if you’d like to order 5# bags of any one variety, so that we can pre-bag those and bring them along.

Mike will have our certified organic non-GMO corn along in two different options:
Whole corn (for making masa) – 2# bags. If you want corn in larger amounts than just 2#, please email me. We will have the little packets of lime necessary for making the masa, as well.
Freshly-ground corn meal – 2# bagsWe took our whole corn down to Windmill Island in Holland and had them grind corn meal for us. This stoneground meal is fresh, fresh, fresh!

In addition, he will have Grassfield Farms organic raw aged cheeses along in the following flavors:
Aged Cheddar – You asked, and we listened! A sharp cheddar, aged a year. Award-winning!
Chili – Gouda with Red Chili flakes, this mild and creamy cheese has delightful spice without being too hot.
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet.
Crofters – This delicious cheese is aged 1 year with a medium sharp taste. The texture is dry and crumbly. Very similar to Parmesan.
Leyden – Originally from the Rhine Valley, now the Grand River Valley; cumin perfectly compliments this aged Dutch cheese.

The Roaring Mouse of Hart
It’s coffee time!  We are now serving freshly brewed pour-over coffee!
Fill a ceramic mug to enjoy as you shop, or get a to-go cup to keep you going through the morning.
A mug-full is $1 and the to-go cup is $3. This week we are planning to have a brand new coffee from Costa Rica! It is sweet and low acid.

In the roaster this week:
         Bolivia Fair Trade Organic – a sweet rich cup with chocolate notes and a bright acidity. Very good with dessert.
         Ethiopia Sidama Fair Trade Organic – a complex cup with berry notes and a sweet finish. This is one of our favorites!
        Decaffinated Peru Fair Trade Organic – rich and sweet, with chocolate and caramel notes. A very delicious decaf! This coffee was decaffeinated using the Mountain Water Process. It is a natural, chemical free process which allows the bean to retain much of its unique flavor.
        Sumatra Fair Trade Organic – Bold, earthy, with a molasses sweetness and a light acidity. This is a limited supply and is only available by the ounce.

Come taste the fresh difference! Brewed samples will be available for all coffees!
We try not to roast too much extra in order to keep the coffee fresh every week. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get some!
