Attending this week’s market:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Winter arrived on the farm this week, and as I sit here writing this note, I am watching the snow silently accumulate on the fields. It’s a good feeling to see the farm slip below this blanket of white. We made the most of last weekend’s warm weather and crossed off almost everything that remained on the fall to-do list, and this Saturday’s market will be our last for the season. And this has been a great season, the farm’s best so far, in part because of all you faithful Sweetwater Market customers: Thank you so very much.
This week we will likely be bringing:
head lettuce
bok choi
tatsoi
brussels sprouts
cabbages

leeks
onions
We will also be bringing eggs from our pastured hens.

We’ll have our 5 kraut flavors for sale and sampling: All-organic ingredients, naturally fermented, and probiotic. Never cooked, raw and vegan, with no vinegar or starter culture, our Kraut is good on its own, or added to many other dishes, providing great flavor and nutrients.
· Carry Me Away – Traditional caraway kraut, as you find on a Reuben sandwich. This kraut is closest to what many grandmothers made in large crocks in their basement.
· Dillyicious – Our best-seller. Tastes like a pickle. Onion, garlic, dill, and turmeric. Our “gateway kraut” for those who say “I don’t like sauerkraut”.
· Purple Hot & Spicy – Onion, garlic and Cayenne. Hot for some, not so hot for others.
· Curryosity – We love India and Indian food. This kraut is a highly versatile addition to many dishes, or by itself.
· Root for Ginger – Our nod to Kim-chee, with similar ingredients — Carrot, radish, ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes. Just a little heat.

Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta
Our corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated corn that dates back to the 1850s. We have always grown hybrid corn, but recently started growing open pollinated corn. Last year we grew both on the same farm, under the same growing conditions, and ran a protein test on them. The hybrid came back with test results of 7.3% protein and the Wapsie Valley came back as 10.2% After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds

FROZEN LAMB BRAT BUNDLE – 1/2 grass-fed lamb, already processed into:
2 packages brat patties (4/pkg)
2 packages patties (4/pkg)
4 packages brat links (4/pkg)
3 packages hot italian sausage links (4/pkg)
2 packages summer sausage (about 1# each)
I will have a bundle or two along this Saturday. First come, first served.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Dryer Balls — I will have these along this Saturday. If you are interested in other wool products (yarn, roving), please email me so that I can take along what you’re interested in.
Please note: This will be my last trip to Sweetwater until after the Kerstmarkt. I’ll probably be back mid-December.
Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Here’s your vocabulary word for the week: Penology, “the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.” If you’ve ever followed the old rule of thumb about planting your peas when the forsythia bloom, you were practicing phenology. In the fall, I’ve got two signs I watch for. One is when the farm cat spends more time indoors than out, like he’s starting to do now, I know winter is near. And the second is when the towering maple tree in the farmyard turns brilliant red-orange, like it did this week—and it’s always the last maple on the farm to change colors—when that happens I know I’m in the home stretch of the season and had better get a move on preparing for winter. It’s coming.
This week we will bring
Head lettuce
Bok choi
Fennel
Scallions
Mini-cabbages
Full size cabbages
Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Starting Sunday evening through to Tuesday nights, we were given over four, probably close to five inches of rain. Friends, that’s a lot of water for the fields to absorb all at once, and while I was sad to miss all of you at market last Saturday, I am glad I made the time to finish up the last essential bits of field work – most importantly, planting next year’s garlic crop.
And speaking of planting garlic this week I will have seed garlic available for sale. This garlic has been passed down through my family for five generations, so I can’t tell you its name. We just call it Blackbird Garlic. I can tell you that it is a hardneck variety with good flavor and is beginning to be acclimated to West Michigan growing conditions. I have spent the last couple of years improving my seed stock and now feel like I can offer it for sale.
In addition we will bring
Head lettuce
Fennel
Scallions
Mini-cabbages
Full size cabbages
Kohlrabi
Brussels sprouts
Cauliflower
Sweet peppers
Hot peppers
Butternut Squash
Potatoes
Onions
Shallots
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta
Our corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated corn that dates back to the 1850s. We have always grown hybrid corn, but recently started growing open pollinated corn. Last year we grew both on the same farm, under the same growing conditions, and ran a protein test on them. The hybrid came back with test results of 7.3% protein and the Wapsie Valley came back as 10.2% After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds
WHAT GOES ON YOUR SKIN IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU EAT!
If you’re using commercial sunscreens, lotions, lip products, deodorant, lip care, pain medications, and/or steroid treatments, you’re allowing a lot of JUNK into your blood stream that eating clean can’t fix!
You don’t have to spend big money or support large companies (that are located who knows where?) to find safe and sustainably processed products.  You can find them right here!
I encourage you to give my products a chance.  You’ll find healthier and affordable alternatives to your current SKIN & PERSONAL CARE products, BABY care (diaper, rash, lotion), and also HERBAL SOLUTIONS for a wide variety minor skin and health concerns- all made right here in West Michigan.
I’m looking forward to showing you how I can help you make the switch to better!
Thanks, Rachel
Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Since the early fall had been so dry, last weekend’s three inches of rain was welcome, but still a lot of water for the fields to handle. I need a window where the fields are dry enough to work so that I can plant my garlic for next season and sow some cover crops to protect and improve the soil. It looks like this weekend is that window before more rain arrives next week, so I will be in the fields and not at market this Saturday. Look for us to return the following week with more fall goodness!
Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
October on the farm is the time of winding down. Each harvest day empties the fields a little more, and as they empty, we begin our end-of-season clean up. Even so, there are a few jobs that, rather than put the past year to bed, look ahead to next one: for example, my favorite fall task, planting garlic, really the first job of next season and a reminder that the farm’s year is not a point-to-point sprint but a big wheel, and with each turn we’re bound to cover just a little more ground.
This week we likely will be bringing:
We’re grateful that the past week’s unseasonable heat has broken and are looking forward to the coming cooler days. It’s still too dry, though, with Southwestern Michigan now officially in the first stage of drought and right on the cusp of the second. Fortunately, we have irrigation and have been using it non-stop for a couple of weeks now. Nevertheless, the crops in the fields are doing well, with those of summer continuing to wind down while those for fall ramping up. It should be a delicious season.
This week we likely will be bringing:
Head lettuce
Chard
Mini-cabbage
Napa cabbage
Broccoli
Kohlrabi
Sweet peppers
Hot peppers
Eggplant
Red tomatoes
Heirloom tomatoes
Shallots
We will have bulk quantities of paste tomatoes available, $40 for 25 pounds (about a half bushel)
We will also have eggs from our flock of pastured hens.
