Market Info Booth
Special deal!  $5 in market bucks to the first 10 customers who stop by our info booth and solve this week’s puzzle! Last week’s email got stopped at the border & here is the explanation from our sponsors: When the system comes across something that appears to be malicious or it’s unsure, it places the account on hold, requiring a human review process to take place. After carefully reviewing the content, we could see that it was fine. Question: What word from last week’s email do you think might have gotten held back by customs? (hint: this may require visiting our website to get last week’s email! Sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org  )

3nd Week for ASPARAGUS!
If you haven’t gotten your asparagus yet, the season is starting to slow down so come this week! I’ll be at market with Certified Organic Asparagus. Thank You!

Shady Side Farm of Holland
*Accepts debit/credit cards.
New products! We will have a prepared bean salad along to market this week. Michael, the chef at The Farmhouse Deli in Douglas, has been using our beans in prepared dishes that he offers at the deli. We will be bringing small quantities of a different prepared bean dish each time we come to market.
We also have frozen cuts of grass-fed lamb available for purchase. These lambs were born on our farm, and fed exclusively pasture and hay (in the winter). No grain, no chemicals. Our lamb is sweet and mild in flavor—not gamey. Special this week–buy 2 bags of bones (for broth), get the 3rd bag free. While supplies last.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you’d rather cook your own, choose from our farm’s certified organic beans:
Bean Medley – A mixture of several of our beans, good for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
Or choose from the varieties we’ve swapped to obtain from another farmer from the thumb area of Michigan. Kevin from Sheridan Acres is transitioning to organic, and his beans have been grown without the use of chemicals. These varieties include:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Dapple Grey – You’ll have to let me know about these beans—I haven’t cooked with them yet!
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
If you are interested in bulk orders of beans (5# or more of any one kind), please email me to inquire about prices and to place your order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta — Our certified organic corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated (non-GMO) corn that dates back to the 1850s. After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds

From the Editor
This memorial day weekend, please remember those who sacrificed for their country.  Maybe check out some names & stats of Iraq servicepeople here: http://icasualties.org/Iraq/Fatalities.aspx?te=1&nl=cooking&emc=edit_ck_20180525
Or from Afghanistan here: http://icasualties.org/OEF/ByTheatre.aspx?te=1&nl=cooking&emc=edit_ck_20180525
My favorite food author said it best: These men and women are worth thinking about before you get going with the food and the festivities: what they sacrificed, what their families lost.

Then, stop by Sweetwater on Saturday from 9-12noon to find the best in locally grown & produced foods for your weekend feast!

Special deal for first 10 customers – see end of newsletter at Market Info booth listing!

New this week—grass-fed lamb! We have stew meat, shanks, steaks, chops, and bones for making your own broth. Check out: https://www.superchargedfood.com/create/recipe-book/soup/supercharged-lamb-bone-broth/
Choose from our farm’s certified organic beans:
Bean Medley – A mixture of several of our beans, good for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
Or choose from the varieties we’ve swapped to obtain from another farmer from the thumb area of Michigan. Kevin from Sheridan Acres is transitioning to organic, and his beans have been grown without the use of chemicals. These varieties include:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Dapple Grey – Hold shape well, creamy texture, mild flavor.
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
If you are interested in bulk orders of beans (5# or more of any one kind), please email me to inquire about prices and to place your order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta — Our certified organic corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated (non-GMO) corn that dates back to the 1850s.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Products — I’ll have dryer balls along, but if there is something else you are interested in (socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and your emails help me to know what to take along…

NEW! Fresh Shitakes!!
Hello, all! I’m glad to be back to market. This week we have a new assortment of wood products by Jim. He has some really unique new designs. I’ll bring some of the Apron Lady’s aprons and kids sized aprons as well as burp cloths. Jellies, dried veggies, dried shiitake mushrooms and pink Himalayan salt will be available. The rain has really greened up the farm, asparagus could be coming soon! The chicken girls have been busy so there will be eggs for sale, too. See you this week!

Scholl Farm of Montague
Cold season grasses are absorbing the warm rains of Spring. Chickens are foraging on the first tender blades and venturing out further into the pasture. Between the clumps of grasses they are scratching for subterranean organisms which are awakening in the warm soil. Spring is finally here.
We’ll be there with:
Eggs; chicken, duck and goose
We feed our feathered friends certified organic feed from Grice farms. Their nests are lined with the finest alfalfa hay (edible bedding).
See you at The Market.

On Saturday, choose from our farm’s certified organic beans:
Dapple Grey – You’ll have to let me know about these beans—I haven’t cooked with them yet!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta — Our certified organic corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated (non-GMO) corn that dates back to the 1850s. After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Products — I’ll have dryer balls along, but if there is something else you are interested in (socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and your emails help me to know what to take along…

HEN PECKED – a) the very prestigious position of having the singular attention of a
hen. b) received on the back of the hand while prematurely collecting eggs from under a
hen.
BIRD BRAIN – The most sophisticated brain developed thus far in the evolutionary
process Therefore used as a compliment.
CHICKEN-HEARTED – akin to Maitre or “Loving Kindness” in Buddhism.
CHICK FLICK – that cute little tail flick of an adolescent hen’s rump, not to be confused
with the flirtatious sashay used by mischievous hens in red comb districts often located
within shady corners of the barn yard.
