Beech Coast Studio Pottery of West Olive

Susan Hoekema is back with functional pottery created in her backyard studio.  Her stoneware bowls, mugs, and plates are inspired by Lake Michigan, the dunes, and the woods.  Joining her Michigan tree mugs this year are African tree mugs and maple syrup bottles whose glass stoppers came from Kenya.  Also available are tumblers painted with Lake Michigan storms, sunsets and calm warm days and tile trivets.

Bee & Botanicals of Spring Lake
In Honor of Green Saturday
– Do something good for you and your family burn beeswax candles!

Why burn beeswax?
Beeswax is an all natural and renewable resource. Many candles are petroleum based paraffin, often bleached and they often contain artificial fragrances. Beeswax has a natural warm honey scent and ours, if they are scented (check out our frosted votives and travel tins), uses only the finest essential oil for scent.  Beeswax is also creates negative ions when burned which help clean the air.  The candles burn clean without soot. Due to the high melting temperature, your candle will give you many hours of sweetness and the brightest of candle light!
Hasselman’s Honey
Honey Sticks this week!
Honey comes in many sizes and pretty gift bottles to choose from. Great for holiday cooking or a warm cup of tea and toast.  Locally made by bee’s in Fremont, Michigan. Make it a gift bag and add a beeswax candle!

Parsnip quiche, anyone? You’ll find great recipe ideas for the wonderful roots at the market this week!

About apples….many customers have been asking where the apples are this season. Conversations with several growers tell us that this spring’s weird hot weather and then successive frosts severely set back the organic apple season this year. There is hope, however. If you don’t mind a drive, Cherry Pointe Market in Shelby has apples that have been grown without chemicals for over 3 years; she is not considering certification at this point but they are grown according to NOP regs. http://www.cherrypointmarket.net/contactus.htm

Also, Fruitful Acres, our normal apple vendor, has had a disappointing season for fresh apples and is processing organic Apple Cider as I write this; they plan to be at the next market.

To meet the demand for fresh apples, Jim Olson will be bringing nearly a hundred pounds of Mutsu & Red Delicious apples he harvested from a neighbors orchard. The orchardist decided not to bother with spraying at all this year, so they may not be picture perfect but they will be unsprayed. We will continue to search for more organic sources to bring you the kind of fruit you expect at Sweetwater.
