New Vendor of Certified Organic Blueberries!

We add a new vendor this week: Wind Dancer Farms!

At this week’s market:

Wind Dancer Farms of West Olive

Wind Dancer Farms is a second generation family farm located in the heart of farm country in the Grand Haven area. Richard and Judy Rant began farming 30 years ago. When Richard passed away  son RJ got involved and began to turn the farm towards organic farming methods. The blueberry production was certified organic in 2010. Today, daughter Megan Wilson has also gotten involved, helping to bring the berries to market. Says Megan, “We decided to become organic when we recognized that for us to be healthy, we knew we needed to grow healthy, strong plants.  When you feed beneficial food to your soil, the soil then feeds the plants healthy food and the plants produce nutrient enriched blueberries for people to eat. ” We couldn’t agree more, Megan!

Funny Farm of Grant

We’ll be at market with pickles, cukes,  kales,  garlic,  potatoes, basil, scallions, summer squash, and okra!

Shady Side Farm of Holland

Mike from Shady Side Farm will be at market Saturday with certified organic black turtle and pinto beans. Here’s a great summer salad that uses black beans:

Mediterranean Black Bean Salad

3-4 cups black beans (cooked previously)*

1/2 cup sliced green onions

1 large tomato, seeded and diced

1 stalk celery, diced

1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

1 Tbsp. fresh mint, chopped (or 1 tsp. dried mint)

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup olive oil

a dash of Tabasco sauce

1 tsp. cumin

salt and pepper to taste

Drain and rinse black beans. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, refrigerating for at least 1 hour (better if left overnight) to combine flavors.

*Soak black beans overnight. The next day, cook in heavy pot for about two hours, or until tender. Midway through cooking, add onion, garlic, salt, and black pepper to taste. Best idea: soak/cook a large quantity of beans and freeze with liquid in 1 or 2 cup batches for use when a recipe calls for canned beans.

Mike will also have his wool products along–felting kits, roving for felting or spinning, yarn, dryer balls, socks and handwoven rag rugs.

Chickadee Creek of Nunica

We’ll be at the market with Zucchini, summer squash, carrots, cucumbers (slicing and pickling) and chicken eggs.

Grassfield’s Cheese of Coopersville

Grassfields great Gouda’s have graced the market from Sweetwater’s very beginning and now we’re lucky to have Elliot Parcher, nephew and apprentice of Jesse Meerman the cheesemaker bring their wonderful Certified Organic Dutch-style cheese to the market!

At market this week: Gouda: A traditional handmade cheese in keeping with West Michigan’s (and our family’s) Dutch culture.
Lamont Cheddar: A rare, natural rind English cheese, named for the Grand River’s first settlement near our farm.

Chili Cheese: Gouda with Red Chili flakes, this mild and creamy cheese has delightful spice without being too hot.

Country Dill: A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates our cows’ diet.

Edam: A variety of Gouda made with skim milk: Elastic, yet firm, this flawless low fat cheese is our best melter, improving any dish

They’re Back!

Grassfield’s Cheese of Coopersville

Grassfields great Gouda’s have graced the market from Sweetwater’s very beginning, but this is the first time a Grassfield family member will be doing the vending!

Elliot Parcher, nephew and now apprentice of Jesse Meerman the cheesemaker is among the fifth generation of farmers at Grassfields Farm. Started by Peter Meerman back in the early 1800’s, Elliot’s role has included caring for the animals well-being, marketing and now selling the finished product.

This family run farm has been supplying West Michigan with Organic, raw milk cheese for almost a decade, and although the business is growing well outside the confines of West Michigan they will continue to provide for the one place that made their business possible.
