We are so thrilled to have the sheep on grass! We move the flock four times per day to ensure the health of the pasture and the flock (it’s not hard because we have a pretty good system).  In time, as summer progresses and as our pasture improves, we hope to reduce moving them to one or two times per day.  We remain committed to 100% grass-fed because we believe it is the best thing for the lamb, the pasture and You!
We will be at Sweetwater this weekend, June 4, so feel free to pre-order from the linked list.  All of those items will also be available for walk up purchase. A reminder that if you’d like more than one of something, pre-ordering guarantees you’ll get what you want!

The Woven Farmstead

Bring Water to the Woven Farm!
To: The Sweetwater Community and People Who Want to See Small Local Organic Farms Survive
Many of you have already met Samantha Otto & know of her Woven Farmstead.  This extraordinary young farmer joined our market a few seasons ago, coaxing an amazing amount of vegetables from a very small piece of leased land near Wesley School in Muskegon.

Over a year ago Sam & her husband purchased a piece of property in Fruitland Township. They worked diligently to clear that land, & had installed a greenhouse in the middle of winter & shortly after that put in a well and were on their way to realizing the dream of a new farm when through a visit from strangers one day learned they had been sold the wrong parcel of land!

After consulting with the real estate agent who sold them the property she secured the correct parcel and without skipping a beat deconstructed the hoophouse & well and moved it to the new parcel further north.

To try to explain Sam’s “get it done” spirit, you only need to read what she wrote after moving to the new parcel:  “It’s wild how vastly different this space is, compared to what we thought we had purchased. In many ways, the differences are flustering. So many set backs and losses and extra work going into the differences; yet this land continues to shine with its beauty and offerings. I am grateful for this space, and so excited to share it with you this season.”
The new property had to be cleared, it needed a road and the weather did not cooperate. None of which stopped Sam.
Until now.
Again from Sam: “Once the land was ready, we reinstalled the well earlier this month only to discover it was dry. We then reinstalled it again, and again, and AGAIN! We are currently on our 5th install and our 3rd set of parts. between hitting clay, stripping threads, and wasting a whole lot of time, we are shifting our focus to other alternatives, and will hopefully have water soon!”
As of this writing Sam is bringing in water and doing as much handwatering as she can manage. Several neighboring farms, Tortoise & Hare & Lundell Farm have offered to help give her water in large containers, but CLEARLY this will not work for the field crops and the future of her farm’s success.

The growing season is here, and the professional drillers Sam has conferred with have told her that she may have to put in a residential well, which means she has to go very deep, maybe 200 ft deep, and that brings us to our urgent request:  The Woven Farm needs funds, immediately, in order to get water.
You can read about Sam’s saga on her Instagram page here https://www.instagram.com/the.woven.trifecta/

All farmers know that they will contend with the vagaries of the weather, and accept that without question as part of the cost of farming. But this is different; this is a show stopping emergency. The growing season is here, and The Woven Farmstead needs our help, and the sooner, the better.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/bring-water-to-woven-farm?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1

We are setting a modest goal of $5000 in hopes that we can quickly raise the needed funds and fingers crossed, surpass that goal to help Sam get water to her farm.

Laughing Tree Bakery needs your orders by 6pm Tuesday (tomorrow night!).

We hope this Monday finds you rested and ready for the (shortened) week ahead. Please look for an additional email coming on Wednesday with an urgent request for help. We’ve learned of an emergency situation with one of our farms and hope you will give it some serious consideration.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague

Forest Finds of Muskegon
Plant facts!
St. John’s wort is a summer blooming plant with bright yellow flowers. It is commonly used internally during the dark months for seasonal depression, and shifting moods. It is best to not use internally during the summer, as it can cause photo sensitivity. Interestingly it is wonderful topically for sunburns. Infused into oil it turns the oil a dark red color, due to a constituent in the flowers called hypericum. It is concentrated in little dots on the edge of the petals. St. John’s wort oil is used topically for inflammation, sunburns, irritated skin, and soothing shingles. Check out our St Johns wort oil!

On May 21 we will not be at Sweetwater.  We will be at Muskegon Farmers Market, though.  Likewise, during June and July, we will not be at Sweetwater but we will still be at the Muskegon Farmers Market, and our stall is actually 148.  We will return to Sweetwater in August.
Also, people wonder what we will have for walk up.  Pretty much everything on this list is available for walk up in small quantity unless the listing says *low stock, pre-order only* or it is marked OUT in which case I usually give a date when it will be back in stock.  If you want more than one of something, then I advise pre-ordering.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Turns out (now that Covid is maybe not a thing anymore) my Mom has a social life. She has celebrations to attend: graduation open houses, her own 50th wedding anniversary party, and, by the way, riding her bike across Michigan as she has done every June for the past 30 years (minus the last 2). She covers market for me out of the goodness of her heart. With Mom absent, The Pasturage will be as well. We will not be at Sweetwater on May 21, and also for June and July. You can always find me, and all the goods, a scant 12 miles north at the Muskegon Farmers Market, stall 138. Or load up now!
