Friday Update Newsletter

I can’t tell you (do I even need to?) how exciting it is to have fresh local & organically grown greens again! After a lonnnnng winter with those boring, wilted, too many miles on ‘em greens from the big box stores, it’s heaven!

Stu Scholl  called this morning with an update on his asparagus. The week turned chilly and the growth slowed down a bit so he is limiting all sales this week to 1.5 lbs for $5 for green and 1.5lbs $6 for purple per customer. He will have some available for walk up sales on Saturday as well.

Dark Waters Coffee Roasters will have freshly brewed coffee by the cup as well as whole bean bags for walk up sales Saturday!

Blackbird Farms will be back with more herb & vegetable plants, with a Friday noon deadline for preorders. They will also have the first of the kale, green garlic & scallion bunches for early birds to the market Saturday!

Liberty will return with more greens, come say hi to Olivia this week! They will also have chicken available for preordering until 6pm Friday evening.

See you at the market!

Plant facts!
St. John’s wort is a summer blooming plant with bright yellow flowers. It is commonly used internally during the dark months for seasonal depression, and shifting moods. It is best to not use internally during the summer, as it can cause photo sensitivity. Interestingly it is wonderful topically for sunburns. Infused into oil it turns the oil a dark red color, due to a constituent in the flowers called hypericum. It is concentrated in little dots on the edge of the petals. St. John’s wort oil is used topically for inflammation, sunburns, irritated skin, and soothing shingles. Check out our St Johns wort oil!

On May 21 we will not be at Sweetwater.  We will be at Muskegon Farmers Market, though.  Likewise, during June and July, we will not be at Sweetwater but we will still be at the Muskegon Farmers Market, and our stall is actually 148.  We will return to Sweetwater in August.
Also, people wonder what we will have for walk up.  Pretty much everything on this list is available for walk up in small quantity unless the listing says *low stock, pre-order only* or it is marked OUT in which case I usually give a date when it will be back in stock.  If you want more than one of something, then I advise pre-ordering.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Turns out (now that Covid is maybe not a thing anymore) my Mom has a social life. She has celebrations to attend: graduation open houses, her own 50th wedding anniversary party, and, by the way, riding her bike across Michigan as she has done every June for the past 30 years (minus the last 2). She covers market for me out of the goodness of her heart. With Mom absent, The Pasturage will be as well. We will not be at Sweetwater on May 21, and also for June and July. You can always find me, and all the goods, a scant 12 miles north at the Muskegon Farmers Market, stall 138. Or load up now!

Friday Update Newsletter
Along with “A Call To Farms” by Woody Tasch, there is an equally compelling read to be had in “Regeneration-Ending the Climate Crisis in One Generation” by Paul Hawken. Snip: “Do you feel stressed about climate change? Stress is your brain telling you to act. Stress is a signal; it is urging you to do something. Not only do actions change your beliefs, your actions change other people’s beliefs. When honey bee scouts find a bounty of blooms and nectar, they return to the hive, where they do a symbolic waggle dance at the entrance of the hive. The dance signals the precise direction and distance to the flowering plants or trees. Once worker bees have seen the dance, they have the necessary information and fly straight to the source. It is time for humanity to create waggle dances unique to their knowledge, place, and determination. Another way to look at this time in history is this: we are being homeschooled by the planet, our teacher.”
What are you reading that is compelling you to act? Email us at sweetwaterlocalfoods@gmail.com and we’ll share it here!

Addy has updated her list for tomorrow, and remember there’s still time to get those preorders in for everyone else attending Saturday April 16th!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Happy Easter!  Hallelujah, we saw the sun this past weekend!  Keep in mind that we have leg of lamb (bone-in and boneless), lamb sirloin roast (for a small crowd), pork loin roast, fresh ham, pork shoulder roast, and pork butt roast available for your Easter celebration.  We sold out of the nitrate-free whole hams.  We also have no nitrate bacon, no nitrate jowl bacon (aka guanciale), fresh side pork, pork liver, spare ribs, no nitrate ham slices and sugar-free polish sausage now in stock.  My Mom said “Wow! That polish sausage tastes just like I remember it as a kid!” A perfect Easter accompaniment to hard-boiled eggs and coffee cake for breakfast (that’s what I grew up eating every Easter morning).  Enjoy!
