Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Here’s your vocabulary word for the week: Penology, “the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.” If you’ve ever followed the old rule of thumb about planting your peas when the forsythia bloom, you were practicing phenology. In the fall, I’ve got two signs I watch for. One is when the farm cat spends more time indoors than out, like he’s starting to do now, I know winter is near. And the second is when the towering maple tree in the farmyard turns brilliant red-orange, like it did this week—and it’s always the last maple on the farm to change colors—when that happens I know I’m in the home stretch of the season and had better get a move on preparing for winter. It’s coming.
This week we will bring
Head lettuce
Bok choi
Fennel
Scallions
Mini-cabbages
Full size cabbages
