The farm is home to 150 or so sheep and some chickens. With the help of our parents and children we raise hay and row crops, including edible beans, corn and small grains. Wool from our sheep is dyed at the farm, and in our spare time Mike makes beautiful, warm wool socks and Lona makes hefty rugs from recycled fabrics. We will have these at the market as well as bagged & dyed roving wool for spinning.

In Praise of the Humble Parsnip & Other Great Roots!

Parsnip quiche, anyone? You’ll find great recipe ideas for the wonderful roots at the market this week!

About apples….many customers have been asking where the apples are this season. Conversations with several growers tell us that this spring’s weird hot weather and then successive frosts severely set back the organic apple season this year. There is hope, however. If you don’t mind a drive, Cherry Pointe Market in Shelby has apples that have been grown without chemicals for over 3 years; she is not considering certification at this point but they are grown according to NOP regs. http://www.cherrypointmarket.net/contactus.htm

Also, Fruitful Acres, our normal apple vendor, has had a disappointing season for fresh apples and is processing organic Apple Cider as I write this; they plan to be at the next market.

To meet the demand for fresh apples, Jim Olson will be bringing nearly a hundred pounds of Mutsu & Red Delicious apples he harvested from a neighbors orchard. The orchardist decided not to bother with spraying at all this year, so they may not be picture perfect but they will be unsprayed. We will continue to search for more organic sources to bring you the kind of fruit you expect at Sweetwater.

Imagination to Creation Jewelry of North Muskegon
As some of you know, I am planning on going in a different direction regarding my jewelry creations.  Therefore, I will be hosting several sales to liquidate my inventory.  I began doing this following the holiday season last year and still find that I have A LOT of very nice pieces and necklace/earring sets in both gemstone and Swarovski crystal.  This Saturday I will have a “Buy 1 – Get 1” sale.  This means, in effect, you will buy one set or piece and get another of equal or lesser value absolutely free.  What a great time to shop for Christmas gifts for the jewelry lovers on your list or for yourself.  If you cannot make it to market this week for my sale, not to worry.  This sale will continue on until my inventory is depleted.

Last but not least

If you would like to become a Friend of the Market for a suggested donation of $10.00, which entitles you to a free cup of coffee at every market you attend for a full year, please see me at the market this Saturday! We will also have  Higher Grounds Coffee by the Cup for a suggested donation of $1.00.
