BREADBOXES! We are excited to announce that we are taking orders for beautiful, hand-made breadboxes being produced right in Grand Rapids.  The breadboxes have a built-in cutting board (it also doubles as the door) and are made of Michigan Hickory that’s been finished with food grade wood oil.  {The pieces of wood are actually all “cut-offs” from larger projects so the breadboxes are a great way to re-purpose this scrap wood.} There will be a display model breadbox at both markets so that you can see how beautiful these handmade treasures are!  Orders can be shipped anywhere in the country or can be delivered to either of the markets for a convenient pickup site.  The turn around time is 1-2 weeks.  The cost of the breadboxes is $128.  For an additional $7 you can have our logo laser-engraved on the front!  Ask us for an order form this weekend at the market!  {Hilde’s father Peter is actually the one selling the breadboxes —we are just supportive middlemen!)

The Roaring Mouse Coffee Roasters of Hart
This cooler weather is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee, tea or Hot Chocolate! Any way you like it, we have you covered! Every week we have 4-6 varieties of freshly roasted coffee, and 5+ varieties of loose leaf tea. This week we are adding Hot Chocolate to the lineup! Come check out our new shipment of Chocolate! We restocked everyone’s favorites, and got a few new ones to try. Our new roaster is installed in the new facility, and we are working on the licensing, so be watching for some exciting new developments over the next few weeks!
Also new for us, we are adding some organic nuts and chocolate chips to our lineup. Hopefully they will be in time for this weekend, but we will for sure have them next weekend.

Check our facebook page for details on our coffee of the week.

We will also plan to bring our Guatemala FTO, Papua New Guinea FTO, Colombia FTO, and a Decaf.

As always, we sell our coffee by the ounce so you can get the perfect amount to use while it is the freshest. We also have gift certificates; the perfect gift for a coffee lover!
Come taste the fresh difference! Coffee is seasonal, so expect some variety. We try not to roast too much extra in order to keep the coffee fresh every week.

Our list of Teas and Chocolates has gotten too long to include here, so check out our Facebook page for the full list of what we have available.

Email us to order in advance, and we will have it bagged up and ready for you. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get there, and speed up your shopping if you are in a hurry!

Wild Earth Chocolate of Muskegon
This week, I will definitely have Heart Chocolate, the 80% dark chocolate sweetened with D-ribose, for a big boost of calm energy right to your cells. D-ribose is a sweet supplement that is used for heart, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia patients to help them regain their cellular energy, so they can begin to move again.
We like to Move it, move it!
Sometimes we don’t realize how wonderful it is to move, until we can’t move good anymore… My advice from personal experience… Don’t go there.
Get some Wild Earth Heart Chocolate,
put it on your tongue,
close your mouth and smile,
Dance with wild abandon, with or without music,
but without chewing,
till your chocolate melts in your mouth.
Thank your body, for the ride, then get on with enjoying your day.

Shady Side Farm of Holland
This is the last week I will be at market for nearly a month. Every year we sell our wool goods and beans at Holland’s Kerstmarkt, an open-air Christmas market that is held on Friday evenings and Saturdays. I will be back at Sweetwater on December 19th. Make sure you take inventory of your bean supply before you come on Saturday. If you’d like to buy larger quantities (5# bags), please email me with your order before Friday at 5 p.m.

I will have along to market our 16 varieties of certified organic dry beans, all grown by us on our farm south of Grand Haven. Did you know you can cook your beans in a crock pot or slow cooker? I just did some Painted Ladies this week, and they took about 3 hours to cook on high and they were last year’s beans! For best results, cook them when you are home so that you can check them every 30-60 minutes.

This is perfect soup weather. For white bean soups, I suggest either Hutterite Soup Beans or Marrow Beans. Marrow beans are plump, soft white beans. They may be Middle Eastern in origin. These beans soak up the flavors of whatever you cook them with. Their texture is creamy, with a meaty flavor. They make a wonderful soup, of course, and can be used in baked beans, or just eaten plain with some seasonings.

I will also have Grassfield’s Farm cheese along this week. This is aged cow’s milk cheese from a local, organic dairy farm. Stop by and sample some!

Earthscape Farm of Hesperia

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
With temperatures in the 60s this week, it surely hasn’t felt like November, but winter is coming. Here at the farm, I’ve been busy pulling out tomato stakes, mowing off and tilling under the finished crops, and planting cover crops to protect the soil over the winter and add fertility next year. The warm weather does take the edge off these end-of-season tasks, as well as help push along the final few crops of the season, so I am thankful for it.

This week I will likely bring:
kale
collard greens
bok choi
head lettuce
napa cabbage
mini cabbage
storage cabbage
cauliflower
romanesca
brussels sprouts
leeks
salad turnips
celeriac
carrots
turnips
black spanish, watermelon, and daikon radishes
onions
shallots
garlic

Shady Side Farm of Holland
How is it the first week in November already? The weather this week is gorgeous, and we are busy putting the finishing touches on our growing season. We are starting to make arrangements to have some of the new open-pollinated Wapsie corn ground into meal and grits. Stay tuned for news on that project.

We will be at the market this Saturday with 16 varieties of certified organic dry beans, all grown by us on our farm south of Grand Haven. We encourage you to try some beans if you haven’t had some in a while. They are so delicious and nutritious and are not that hard to work with. Did you know that soaking beans is optional? With beans as fresh as ours are right now, you really can skip this step if you want to. Beans continue to dry out over time. So the older beans are, the more they need rehydrating. They also need a longer cooking time.

October beans are native to Columbia and are a member of the cranberry bean family. These beans have a creamy, velvety-smooth texture, and a slightly nutty flavor. Their thin skin darkens with age. Use in soups, salads and baked beans.

In addition to our beans, I will have raw, aged cheese from Grassfields Farm in Coopersville. Grassfields Farm is an organic dairy farm, and they make aged cheeses from their non-pasturized, non-homogenized organic cow’s milk. I will have several different varieties along Saturday, including something new–Aged Gouda. I will have samples of this new sharp gouda.

Don’t forget to sign up for freezer lamb if you are interested. Within the next couple of weeks we will wrap up the bulk of our lamb season. If you’re not sure if you’re on the list, email me at shadysidefarmmichigan@gmail.com

Hope to see you Saturday!

LOVE

Last year we donated over 1200 pounds of potatoes to local food banks, with over 500 pounds gifted from Sweetwater community members.  Like you, it is very important to us that all our community members have access to healthy and local food.  Help us do this again this season.  You can help feed your neighbors in need.  Food banks are usually desperate for fresh, local food.  Potatoes are a great resource for this.  They store well, are nutrient dense, and most people are comfortable preparing them.  We’ll provide half and you fund the other half.  Potatoes are normally $1.50/lb, when you buy potatoes for the food bank, you pay only 0.75.  The power of human generosity is amazing.  May all be fed.

Meadow View Goat Dairy of Fremont
Chevreʹ  Fresh chevre with a nice spreading consistency, perfect for sandwich toppings and cooking. Cherry Capital Foods of Traverse City says  ” The chèvre produced by Meadow View has a pitch perfect acidity on the palate that becomes gently sweet and milky with a grassy note on the finish.”
Seasoned Chevreʹ
Our fresh Chevre available in your favorite flavorings: Blueberry Vanilla (great on a morning bagel!) Hickory-smoked bacon Bits, Garlic, Italian Herb, & Hot Pepper
Feta
A smooth and creamy feta which is low in salt and rich in fresh goat milk flavor. The brining process gives feta cheese a salty, tangy flavor and a crumbly consistency. Feta cheese can be served as a table cheese, used in baking savory dishes, or served as an appetizer or in salads. The classic Greek salad is made with Feta cheese. In crumbles or cubes for easy slicing.
Tomme de Fremont
Our first aged cheese is quickly becoming a customer favorite! Developed from a French recipe, Tomme is a lower fat mold ripened cheese, aged at least 60 days. This gives the cheese a stronger flavor & firmer texture than the fresh Chevres, perfect for slicing.
Dutch Kase
A Meadow View Dairy original! If you are looking for a nicely aged but milder version of our Tomme, this is the cheese for you. Vacuum sealed without mold and aged at least 60 days.
Marco Similar to Dutch Kase but pasteurized and vacuum sealed, it comes in Pepper, Sage, Italian & Garlic.
Other items from our farm:
We’ll also have eggs from our free-range, GMO-free flock.
Note: We will be attending market the last Saturday of every month.

Come check out our new shipment of Chocolate! We restocked everyone’s favorites, and got a few new ones to try. Our new roaster is installed in the new facility, and we are working on the licensing, so be watching for some exciting new developments over the next few weeks!

We will not be at market on Nov 8, so stock up this weekend!

Email us to order in advance, and we will have it bagged up and ready for you. Advance orders will ensure that we don’t run out of your favorite coffee before you get there, and speed up your shopping if you are in a hurry!

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
As temperatures drop, fall crops become sweeter, creating their own sort of antifreeze. The first frost is also my signal to begin the process of winding things down on the farm and preparing everything for the coming winter.

tatsoi
komatsuna
napa cabbages
mini cabbages
storage cabbages

leeks
scallions

Shady Side Farm of Holland
We’ve wrapped up bean harvest (except for the last variety, which looks like it would probably finish if we had 3 more months of hot weather–oh well!). We’ve also wrapped up our corn harvest, which is the last of the harvesting. So we think now about finishing up tasks that need to be done before winter–getting the barn ready for the sheep, putting away equipment, etc. And since it is getting dark earlier and earlier, we are starting to make socks and rugs and mittens and scarves again in the evenings.

We will be at the market this Saturday with 16 varieties of certified organic dry beans, all grown by us on our farm south of Grand Haven. We encourage you to try some beans if you haven’t had some in a while. They are so delicious and nutritious and are not that hard to work with. I am happy to talk you through the process, with tips and tricks I’ve learned of by talking with others and experimenting on my own.

One of the beans that we have not had in stock for a couple of years is the Green Flageolet. Green Flageolet Beans were introduced at the International Paris Exposition in 1878. These thin, mint green beans have a creamy, firm texture and a sweet mellow flavor. A quick-cooking bean, they don’t need to be soaked and become increasingly creamy the longer you cooks them. Flageolets are a great companion to fish or lamb. I like to serve them with butter, salt and dill.

In addition to our beans, I will have raw, aged cheese from Grassfields Farm in Coopersville. Grassfields Farm is an organic dairy farm, and they make aged cheeses from their non-pasturized, non-homogenized organic cow’s milk. I will have several different varieties along Saturday, including both the Aged Edam and the regular Edam (just back in stock after a couple of months).

Hope to see you Saturday!

This week we are adding Hot Chocolate to the lineup. There will be a limited amount available by the cup or for samples this week, but we plan to have the mix available for purchase next week. We are sorry to announce, we will still have a short lineup of chocolate this week pending our new shipment which will arrive by next weekend. Thank you for your patience! Our new roaster is installed in the new facility, and we are working on the licensing, so be watching for some exciting new developments over the next few weeks!

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Frost arrived at the farm Friday morning last week, and though that does end some things, it also brings the heart of the fall crops into their own. As temperatures drop, they become sweeter, creating their own sort of antifreeze. The first frost is also my signal to begin the process of winding things down on the farm and preparing everything for the coming winter.
This week I will likely bring:
kale
collard greens
bok choi
tatsoi
komatsuna
napa cabbages
broccoli
baby fennel
leeks
celeriac
carrots
potatoes
turnips
fall radishes
red and yellow onions
shallots
garlic

Shady Side Farm of Holland
We will have the following freshly-harvested varieties of our certified organic beans along this week:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Black Valentine – Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips.
Green Flageolet – Fine, thin bean with a creamy, firm texture and a sweet mellow flavor.
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Jacob’s Cattle – Big and meaty, taste & texture of new potatoes, traditional baked beans, chili.
Jacob’s Cattle Gold – Hold their shape and soak up other flavors well. Great for soups, stews, salads and baked beans.
Marrow – Plump, soft white beans that soak up the flavors of whatever you cook them with. Great soup beans.
October – Creamy, velvety smooth texture, nutty, sweet flavor, thin skin, soups or chili.
Nuña – Soak, then fry in oil in a pan for a few minutes for a firmer bean experience. Taste like fried potatoes.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking. Also have a limited supply of split pintos for $1/pound.
NEW! Tiger Eye – Rich, hearty flavor, with a smooth texture and tender skins.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
Leftover from last year, and discounted:
Black Turtle – (last year’s crop) Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture. Discounted $1 a pound while supplies last.
Please let us know ahead of time if you’d like to order 5# bags of any one variety, so that we can pre-bag those and bring them along.
Ask about our grassfed lamb for your freezer. Last year some of our Sweetwater customers loved the lamb they got from us so much that this year they ordered two. (Same thing happened at Fulton Street Market in GR.)
In addition, we offer Grassfield Farms organic raw aged cheeses in the following flavors (new pricing this week):

Smoked Gouda – Smoky and rich, this cheese does not disappoint! $9
Aged Edam – This sharp skim milk cheese is wonderful! $9
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet. $7
Crofters – This delicious cheese is aged at least a year and has a medium sharp taste. The texture is dry and crumbly. Very similar to Parmesan. $9
Fait Gras – Grassfields’ signature cheese, Fait Gras is a triple cream cheddar. Rich! $9
Gouda – A traditional handmade cheese in keeping with West Michigan’s Dutch culture. $7
Lamont Cheddar – A rare, natural rind English cheese, named for the Grand River’s first settlement near our farm. $7
Leyden – Originally from the Rhine Valley, now the Grand River Valley; cumin perfectly compliments this aged Dutch cheese. $7
Cheese Sticks – Want to try some cheese, but don’t need a whole 8 ounces? We’ll have a few cheese sticks along each week, in a variety of cheese types, for $2 each.

Little Red Organics of Freesoil
The fall garden is the best garden, in our humble opinion.  The manic days of planting and cultivating in May and June have been forgotten, and instead the days are slower paced, the summer weed pressure has disappeared, and it has gotten a little frosty.
After a little exposure to chilly, frosty nights, many cold tolerant veggies develop sugars to protect them from freezing.  Any bitterness in broccoli disappears, and spinach becomes quite sweet.

Laughing Tree Bakery of Hart
Greetings from Laughing Tree Brick Oven Bakery—
Some of you recently requested chocolate scones—and so, this Saturday we will be introducing our brand-new DOUBLE CHOCOLATE SCONES made with fair-trade cocoa, organic dark chocolate chips, and just a pinch of fresh orange zest.  $2.50 each.
And once again, autumn means PIES ARE COMING! Pies will be available on Saturday November 22nd and on Wednesday November 25th (pickup site TBA for Wednesday).  We will begin taking orders for pies the first week of November.
ABBA PETER’S FAVORITE APPLE PIE ($25) features an all-butter organic crust, and a mound of local apples seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, and just a bit of fair-trade Demerara brown sugar.  We like to eat this pie for breakfast the morning after Thanksgiving—with a good cup of coffee.  It serves 8 generously.  (Abba Peter is Hilde’s dad.  This is his all-time favorite pie—she’s been making them especially for him for ten years!)
RIGHTEOUS PUMPKIN PIE ($20) features an all-organic oat/seed crust made with rolled oats, sunflower seeds, and flax.  The filling is sumptuous and silky with local squash, our own fresh eggs, cream, vanilla, and spices.  It’s a combination you won’t want to miss as it only comes around once a year!
HELP WANTED!  We are looking for someone to help at our stand for 2 hours on Saturday mornings making and serving the best toast around.  If you love the Sweetwater market (and want an extra reason to get there on Saturdays), send an email to:  charlie@laughingtreebakery.com    If you are interested in working with us, we would love to hear from you!

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
We are set to have a pretty thorough frost over the weekend, so I am busy protecting what I can and harvesting what I can’t. Certainly we are going to say goodbye to the last of the hangers-on of the summer crops this week. But we still have plenty of cold-hardy vegetables in the field to take us through the rest of the fall. Overall, I am ready for this significant shift in the rhythm of the farm.
This week I will likely bring:
kale
chard
collard greens
bok choi
tatsoi
napa cabbages
mini cabbages
broccoli
baby fennel
sweet peppers
eggplant
leeks
celery
carrots
potatoes
turnips
fall radishes
red and yellow onions
shallots
garlic

Shady Side Farm of Holland
The beans are back! We continue to harvest our certified organic beans, and will have the following freshly-harvested varieties along this week:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Black Valentine – Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips.
In addition, we offer Grassfield Farms organic raw aged cheeses in the following flavors:
NEW! Smoked Gouda – I’ll have samples along. Smoky and rich, this cheese does not disappoint!
NEW! Aged Edam – I’ll have samples along. Two years old, this skim milk cheese is wonderful!
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet.
Crofters – This delicious cheese is aged at least a year and has a medium sharp taste. The texture is dry and crumbly. Very similar to Parmesan.
Fait Gras – Grassfields’ signature cheese, Fait Gras is a triple cream cheddar. Rich!
Gouda – A traditional handmade cheese in keeping with West Michigan’s Dutch culture.
Lamont Cheddar – A rare, natural rind English cheese, named for the Grand River’s first settlement near our farm.
Leyden – Originally from the Rhine Valley, now the Grand River Valley; cumin perfectly compliments this aged Dutch cheese.
Cheese Sticks – Want to try some cheese, but don’t need a whole 8 ounces? We’ll have a few cheese sticks along each week, in a variety of cheese types, for $2 each.
Ask about our grassfed lamb for your freezer. Last year some of our Sweetwater customers loved the lamb they got from us so much that this year they ordered two. (Same thing happened at Fulton Street Market in GR.)
Finally, I will have my handwoven rag rugs along this Saturday.
See you Saturday!

Maple Moon Farm of Shelby
We’ve been busy gathering in the harvest and preparing the gardens for the cold weather months.  This week we spent the better part of three days harvesting our potato field.  We grew seven different varieties, and they all look big and beautiful.  We gathered up over 9,000 row ft of potatoes to feed you all winter.  We use an old fashion potato digger that brings the tubers to the surface of the soil, and then we pick them up by hand.  It is one of our favorite harvests!  We are so grateful to Nancy Oomey and Sandy Vandenberg, who played with Zen and Sova while we harvested, and to Elsie Binns and Kathleen Rash for bringing fresh energy to the final day of harvest. We’re also grateful to the Bobiers who rent us the beautiful ground where we grow our potatoes. We’ll begin cleaning and sorting them, and have at least one variety ready for market on Saturday.

Apples are expected to be available Oct 17th – 31st, (tree run / sorted for major defects).  I plan to have these varieties at Market on Oct 24th & 31st in small quantities, as well as 1/2 bu & whole bushel (pending interest).

NOTE: If you can’t make it to the market on Oct 10th, please email me at grmund@aol.com by Oct 14 and will try to arrange for viewing prior to ordering 1/2 & whole bushel quantities. I will schedule delivery / pick-up for the week of Oct 17 – 31.

Laughing Tree Bakery of Hart
Well, we’ve had a fire in the woodstove these past few days—no roaring blaze yet, but just enough to keep the chill out the house.  Our neighbor Jim (for whom Griff’s 8 Grain is named) was out stacking wood on his porch this morning—this is the act which signifies fall for us like no other.  As we passed Jim, my son Finn turned to me in the car and said, “I guess that means winter is coming Mom!”  So grateful Sweetwater when the weather turns cold!
We will be bringing our RUSTIC BAGUETTES to the market every week for the next month or so…  If you haven’t tried one of these hand-rolled beauties, you are in for a treat!  It takes twice as long to roll our baguettes as any of our other loaves—but we think they are well worth the effort…  Ask for a taste!

Big Country:  Made with germ-restored wheat flour and Michigan-grown rye, this 2 pound loaf is sumptuously supple and earthy.  Perfect pick for a crowd.  Price $7.50

Maple Moon Farm of Shelby
Our farm is based on the idea of growing food for our neighbors to contribute to a healthy community.  It is our customers that make us a community farm (because otherwise we’re really just those folks who are growing way too much food).  It is important to us to honor and acknowledge those who support us in all our gorwing endevours.  We want to highlight some of these special people with our Customer of the Month.  For October 2015, that person is Margaret Bart.  Margaret has supported our farm for years, sharing with us her love of food.  She tells us food stories of her youth, shares recipes with us, and is always looking for the smallest produce-just the right size for one person (we now save these for her).  Like most of you that know her, we love Margaret, and are so appreciative of her and the ways she supports our farm.  Like all future Customers of the Month, Margaret will receive 10% off all purchases this month.

We have lots of exciting produce to offer you this week!

FRESH GINGER-we grew this heat loving tropical plant right here in west MI.  Enjoy this baby ginger, incredible flavor and no peeling required.  Available this week only!  This freezes very easily, so you can stock up.

The Roaring Mouse Coffee Roasters of Hart
This cooler weather is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee or tea! Either way you like it, we have you covered! Every week we have 4-6 varieties of freshly roasted coffee, and 5+ varieties of loose leaf tea. We also have some amazing fair-trade organic chocolate barks, and chocolate covered coffee beans! We can only bring a few varieties of our chocolates to the market each week, so be sure to check out our list on Facebook and pre-order if there is something specific you want.

Featured coffee of the week! This week we are featuring our Guatemala Acatenango.. This is a delicious medium roast with notes of almonds and dark bakers chocolate.

We will also plan to bring our Ethiopia Amaro Gayo Natural, Papua New Guinea FTO, Colombia FTO, and Sumatra Decaf.

Our list has gotten too long to include here, so check out our Facebook page for the full list of what we have available.

Meadow View Goat Dairy of Fremont
Cherry Vanilla Chevre is our newest addition to our spreadable Chevres. We think you’ll like this one, especially good on a morning bagel!

Bonao Cacao Wild Earth Chocolate of Muskegon
Wild Earth Chocolate will be at market with the Bonao Cacao products and we will be trying new superfood combinations with the chocolate in the coming weeks, offering limited edition selections as we figure out which ones you want the most. This week we are bringing a couple of takes on chocolate covered Kale. Dehydrated kale leaves are dipped 75% organic chocolate, then sprinkled with Himalayan pink salt. There will also be clusters featuring Kale, with sprouted and dehydrated sunflower and buckwheat sprouts. Great way to get more Kale in the kids and adults.
