Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th, and we have lots of gift ideas!

Great baked goods, Spring Bouquets, Windowsill gardens, garden plants and more for your mom!

Bridge Card Customers – Use Your Card to Start Your Garden!

You can use SNAP benefits to purchase veggie garden plants and we have them this week!

Bags & Blooms of Ravenna

Theresa Loss returns with her beautiful Spring Bouquets just in time for Mother’s Day! Theresa will also have plenty of her signature cloth shopping bags.

Sheryl Marshall Glassworks of Muskegon

As Sheryl says, “Good bye and good buys!” Sheryl is relocating to Ann Arbor and will be offering her beautiful glassworks at great prices just in time for Mother’s Day.

Customers familiar with her work know that glass finds a special form in her capable hands whether fused, slumped, blown, lamp worked or placed in stained glass or mosaics.

This will be her only appearance at Sweetwater, so come and say good bye and possibly pick up a good buy on a piece of her work!

The Fishmonger’s Wife of Muskegon

Finally – we have SMOKED FISH as well as fresh Lake Michigan White Fish!

Pre-orders will be held until 11 a.m. and then released. If you are going to be late feel free to call us at 231-730-3327 to make other arrangements.

This Saturday you’ll have the chance to meet The Wife’s Mom, Nancy.Nancyis a reformed “I Don’t Like Fish” omnivore that we’ve won over to the Fresh Fish side. She’ll be at Sweetwater for the month of May.

We Use a Month’s Worth of Muskegon Chronicles every Saturday… that’s a lot of fish wrap. The up side is that after it has been fish wrap, newspaper can still be recycled. Please feel free to bring us your newspapers throughout the market season, we’ll gladly use them.

We Also Accept and Reuse Plastic Handled Grocery Bags to pack your fish on ice. During the warm summer months it is very important that your fish be kept cold until you are able to refrigerate it. If you want to avoid using plastic bags you can borrow an eco-cooler from us for a $5 deposit, or bring your own cooler with ice to market.

Finally – we have SMOKED FISH as well as fresh Lake Michigan White Fish

Each week, Eric and Amber Mae Petersen purchase fish fresh off the docks from the family business –  Petersen’s Fisheries and then clean, pin bone and package the fish for greatest freshness. From there, Amber Mae takes the fillets to Market.

Earthly Kneads Bakery of Muskegon

Note: This is our last Sweetwater Market. If you are unaware of what’s going on with the bakery, please visit our note at http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=190745604294427

Bread: We will have our usual Saturday fare along with some specials. Gail accidentally ordered 65 pounds of cheese instead of 15, so I have a feeling some cheesy goodness will be on the menu.  If anyone’s interested in really large blocks of organic baby Swiss, please let Gail know. We will be making one of our new loves this weekend, too – Beer Bread made with Oberon Beer, a touch of honey and just a hint of orange. It’s a medium whole wheat.

Scones: As always, made with 100% whole grain flour, organic sweet cream cultured butter, and lots of love. This weekend – Apricot Almond or Dark Chocolate Chip

Cookies: If you’ve been waiting for our Energy Bites to make a comeback before we close, this is the weekend to get them! We have oodles of freshly baked ones for your tasting pleasure. Don’t forget about the Dark Chocolate Chip cookies, too! We also have vegan and gluten-free Cinnamon Sunflower Butter Raisin Cookies.

Granola, Muesli, and Gorp: We are stocked up on all our varieties! Available in 1 pound bags and freshly baked.

Thanks for your business over the years and we hope that we are back baking again for you soon. If you’d like to sign up for our list to be notified when we’re back in business, please sign up with either A.J. at the market, Brian at the shop, or feel free to send us an email at contactus@earthlykneads.com .  Have a great summer!

New Vendor!

The Fishmonger’s Wife of Muskegon
When Amber Mae first married Eric Petersen, she always joked that she was going to open a fish market and call it The Fish Monger’s Wife. Eric thought the market was a good idea, but hated the name. After their first daughter Anna, was born, the couple revisited the idea of opening a market but didn’t want the overhead or time commitment involved with a store front. Luckily for us, they found the perfect solution: Farmer’s Markets! They started at the Muskegon Farmers Market last year and were an instant market favorite. Now, they’ve decided to try our market as well.
Eric has fished commercially with his family at Petersen’s Fisheries since he was old enough to hold a dip net. Meanwhile Amber Mae grew up working with her own family’s retail business.
Each week, the couple purchases fish from Petersen’s Fisheries and then cleans, pin bones and packages the fish for greatest freshness. From there, Amber Mae takes the fillets to Market.
Area residents are initially surprised to see fresh, locally caught whitefish at the market, but then they are delighted. Amber Mae says with a laugh, “We have an agreement. Eric goes on the boat, I go to market and the two shall not cross. That’s how we’ll continue to have a wonderful marriage!”

Daisy Doodles of Whitehall
From Garden Tir na nOg (home of Daisy Doodles): Sunchokes! Jerusalem artichokes! We dug the last of the spring crop, so this is THE chance to get your chokes for eating or planting. If you’re not familiar, sunchokes are the edible tuber of a perennial type of sunflower. They are delicious raw, similar in taste and texture to jicima or water chestnut. Cooked, they take on a variety of flavors and textures depending upon the preparation. Boiled, stir fried, mashed, roasted…use them as you might any number of tubers. Last market we tempted you with the aroma of chokes roasted with garlic and olive oil…who knows what tantalizing temptation awaits this week’s market?

Daisy will be here with plenty of her yummy, healthy treats. Due to another commitment we won’t be at the next Sweetwater market, so now’s the time to stock up!

Last but not least

Hello All,

We have sad news. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of our bakery. It is not the complete end of Earthly Kneads but just a temporary setback. In order to stay in our current location, we had to commit to another 3 years.  We are unable to do so in these tough and unpredictable economic times.

Normal bakery operations will continue until our closing on Friday, May 13th. We will still be at the Sweetwater Local Foods Market until (and including) May 7th.  We will also be at the West Michigan Food Co-Op for one more shopping cycle (pickup day is April 20th).

This has been a very difficult decision for us and a very sad one as well. Please know that Gail is pretty glum about everything and that the decision was not made lightly or in haste.

Gift certificates are no longer for sale. If you have one, please be sure you redeem it before we close.

Wholesale bakery operations are not expected to resume before the next market season ends, but we remain optimistic and hopeful that we will be up and running again soon.

Thank you very much for your support of the bakery all these years. Without you (and Gail’s understanding husband, too!), we would not have had the time that we did. So many of you have become such an integral part of our lives and we feel like you’re family. We will miss you dearly.

Sincerely, All of us at Earthly Kneads

Sweetwater Hugs & Thanks! To new and renewing Friends of the Market: Sam Kline, Betty Sweet, and Dave Fredericks & Hildi Paulsen

How we grow!
In order for you, the customer, to know more about the vendors who stand behind the Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers, each week we will feature one Sweetwater vendor to whom we have posed the question: How, and why do you grow veggies, raise animals, and/or produce products the way you do?

This week we feature Nathan Creswick, of Creswick Farms. Nathan was once described by a local restaurant he supplied as “part mad scientist, part farmer!” We concur. Nathan loves farming, of course, but with his extensive background in engineering he can’t help but want to change that pork into something more, hence all the great Creswick Farms sausages.
From Nathan Creswick the farmer in chief of Creswick Farms: What Makes Creswick Farms Meats and Eggs So Special? Our animals live such stress-free lives that they are rarely sick, and do not need to be treated with pharmaceutical drugs.  All of our cattle are raised on pasture and not in confined lots.  As in nature, their rate of growth is determined by their health and quality of the forage, not hormonal implants and growth promoting additives.  Our products are healthy, wholesome, and natural in every sense of the word.
Our product will always be safe from BSE (Mad Cow) because our animals are never fed reconstituted animal byproducts or poultry litter!  Pasture finishing on high quality forage and intensive pasture management eliminates this risk.
Our animals being on good, clean pasture are higher in beta carotenes, CLAs (Conjugated linoelic acid) and omega3 fatty acids (good cholesterol) and lower omega-6 (bad cholesterol).  Our grass fed beef has about the same fat content as skinless chicken breast.
We are dedicated to providing a pleasurable eating experience each and every time.
We process in a family owned, inspected slaughterhouse, where the animals are not commingled or contaminated with animals of other origins.
No nitrites, MSG, wheat glutens or artificial ingredients used in any of our products.  We use only all-natural or organic ingredients. We only use natural sheep or hog casings from the USA. Our competitors use casings that are either imitation or from China.
Additionally, A Creswick Farm’s sausage combines years of culinary experience, ingredients at their seasonal best and original spice blends all in a natural casing. We combine our finest quality meat with chunks of chopped fruits and vegetables, flavor them with the freshest herbs & lively spices and fire them in specially-designed smokehouses.
Give meat from Creswick Farms a try.  You have never tasted beef this good!

Last but not least

How we grow!
In order for you, the customer, to know more about the vendors who stand behind the Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers, each week we will feature one Sweetwater vendor to whom we have posed the question: How, and why do you grow veggies, raise animals, and/or produce products the way you do?

This week we feature Gail Smythe, founder of Earthly Kneads Bakery. Gail, a former environmental scientist, says that one day, she realized that “..our society spends a lot of time cleaning up mistakes after the fact. Why not just keep them from happening in the first place?” This thought gave birth to her vision at the heart of Earthly Kneads.
From Gail Smythe, owner, Earthly Kneads Bakery of Muskegon: One of the fundamental premises of Earthly Kneads has always been to support farms and producers who are doing what we feel is the right thing for both our planet and its people. It has been a conscious decision and not one made for us by others. In our baked goods, we have always used certified organic dairy from a company that supports small family farms instead of large farming conglomerates. Our flour has always been organic and stone-ground (no bleaching, vitamin-enriching, or brominating allowed!). Not only is organic important, but so is fair-trade. Our sugar is certified fair-trade, certified organic, and cane derived. Our chocolate has always been certified organic and fair-trade. We use 100% organic nut butters that are made here in Michigan, too. We are picky down to every last detail, including our herbs and spices (all 100% certified organic), our pure vanilla (certified organic AND fair trade), our salt (we use Real Salt), and even our leaveners (all aluminum-free). Our eggs come exclusively from Creswick Farms and Larry Hasselman has been providing us with honey for years. Every time we make a purchase, we cast a vote. Each dollar we spend is a vote for the company that we choose to spend it on. At our bakery, we cast our votes for the businesses that we hope can change our world. Many people feel that change can only come from above. We believe that it starts with all of us. Let’s make a difference! Question your food suppliers. If you ever have any questions about any of our ingredients or why we chose them, please don’t hesitate to ask. Happy and healthy eating!

As always, if you would like to become a Friend of the Market for a suggested donation of $10.00, which entitles you to a free cup of coffee at every market you attend for a full year, please see me at the market this Saturday! We will also have  Higher Grounds Coffee by the Cup for a suggested donation of $1.00.

In case anyone needs a last-minute gift, we’ll have our fresh-from-the-farm wool socks, rag rugs, and recycled felted wool mittens and hats. We are Mike and Lona Bronkema of Shady Side Farm and we have been farming since 1992 and have recently transitioned to organic in parts of our operation, certifying through Global Organic Alliance (GOA). The farm is home to 150 or so sheep and some chickens. Wool from our sheep is dyed at the farm, and in our spare time Mike makes beautiful, warm wool socks and Lona makes hefty rugs from recycled fabrics. http://shadysidefarm.etsy.com
