Swingtooth Returns this Week! Fast becoming a market favorite, this musical duo entertains us with their amazing repertoire of classics, jazz & contemporary tunes!

Attending this week’s market:

Mund Farm of  Rothbury

As all you weatherheads in West Michigan know, the temps dropped to 23 on Monday. This froze off most of the new shoots in our fields. If they come back in time we’ll bring asparagus, otherwise we hope to see you all next week!

Funny Farm of Grant

This week we’ll have spinach, spring mix, radishes, arugula, and special for the kitties, cat grass. I have 10 pots available. The cold slowed down the asparagus, so it’s a tossup whether  I’ll have any for sale. I have some dried shiitake mushrooms, too. And maybe some fresh ones. Apron Lady & Janet will return as well!

September’s Herbs & Produce of Montague

September will be bringing her beautiful tulip & daffodil  bouquet blends along with baby spinach, baby kale, arugula and some herbs. We will also have Scholl’s Country Farm eggs from Montague at our booth!

Earthscape Farm of Hesperia

The BOBIER BEEF Story ~  We look forward to getting your pre-orders by Email.  If you want more info about our farm in particular, including prices, send us an email  earthscapefarm@gmail.com .

Our steers and cows were born on our Farm, as were their great-great-great Grandmothers.  We’ve been doing rotational pastures since the 70’s.  We only buy bulls for breeding, and they come from reputable farmers in Michigan.  Our cows raise their own calves until they are weaned at about 9 months.  We raise our own hay, plus what we buy comes from our own neighborhood so we know how it was grown. Our cattle have access to 3-5 acre yards through the winter, with some barn access, fresh water, bedding straw, and all the hay they can eat.  The steers get minimal amounts of homegrown and ground grain during the colder months (like Dessert!).  We think this makes our beef tasty and tender, with all the benefits of grass-fed beef, too!

Earthscape Farm of Hesperia

The BOBIER BEEF Story ~  We look forward to getting your pre-orders by Email, beginning this Sunday, April 28th! If you want more info about our farm in particular, including prices, send us an email at earthscapefarm@gmail.com .

The cattle really hope the weather straightens out so they can get on pasture soon!

BEEF: We should have a good supply of all cuts as more beef is being picked up from Falmouth.

At the market this week:

SPECIALS: Ground Beef – 10 packages for $50.  1 Whole Brisket remains – make Corned Beef!

Beneath the crisp and wintry carpet hid

 A million buds but stay their blossoming;

And trustful birds have built their nests amid

The shuddering boughs, and only wait to sing

Till one soft shower from the south shall bid,

And hither tempt the pilgrim steps of spring.

~Robert Seymour Bridges

Attending this week’s market:

Shady Side Farm of Holland

Lona of Shady Side Farm will be at market again this week with wool products and certified organic beans. This week the Yellow Indian Woman Bean  is our Special of the Week. The 2-lb. bags will be available for $10, regularly $11.50. Yellow Indian Woman is another of our beans that is on the Slow Foods Ark of Taste list. Holds its shape well; great for long cooking. This bean with a mild, creamy flavor is great for soups, salads and even dips. Beans on toast, anyone?

Here’s a great recipe for them:

Yellow Indian Woman Beans with Lemon and Dill

Serves 6

10 minutes preparation time, plus time for soaking the beans

40 minutes cooking time

1 pound dried Yellow Indian Woman Beans or cannellini beans

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil1 large onion

zest of 1 lemon, plus wedges for serving

1/2 cup (or more) chopped dill, divided

2 teaspoons salt (or more to taste)

2 small tomatoes, diced

Soak the beans overnight or quick soak them.  Although the Yellow Indian Woman Beans are dried, they are fresher than those on the grocery store shelf and so will take less time to cook, so if you have not soaked them, you can just bring them to a boil and let them simmer about an hour before you begin the recipe.  This would also work for cannellini beans, but they will take more time, I’d say about an extra hour.

Heat the butter and olive oil in a large saute pan.  Add the onion and saute until the onion is soft, 7 to 8 minutes.  Add the beans with their water, the lemon zest, half of the dill, and the salt.  Let the bean mixture simmer until the beans are quite soft, approximately 30 minutes.  Mash some of the beans against the side of the pot.  Just before serving, add the rest of the dill and the tomatoes and stir just until the tomatoes are warm.  Taste the beans and adjust the flavors to your liking, adding more dill, salt, or a few squirts of lemon juice.  Serve over toast with a lemon wedge and a sprinkle of chopped dill for those who want a little extra.

Crow Feather Farm of Hesperia

Greens! If you were on the Dec 2nd Farm Tour you will remember the first stop at the farm of Nick Partee and Carolyn Harper. They are excited to be bringing their greens to market for the first time, and you can find them at the Earthscape Farm vendor booth! This week; we will have our beautiful eggs, baby kale with miners’ lettuce salad mix, cilantro and BEET GREENS!

Earthscape Farm of Hesperia

Potatoes ~ Red Norland, White (Kennebec, Russet, Bintje, Augusta).  We have really nice ones and some seconds.

Eggs from our small flock.

The BOBIER BEEF Story ~  Our steers and cows were born on our Farm, as were their great-great-great Grandmothers.

At the market this week:

Specialty cuts:  Whole Beef Briskets (only have 2 - preorder if you want one!), Flank Steak and Skirt Steak.

Ground beef  1 lb pkgs

Ground Sirloin

Ground Beef Patties  1/4 # each, usually 4 to a package

Bone-In:  Rib, T-Bone and Porterhouse Steaks

Boneless:  Tenderloin – Do a stir-fry with a small package or grill some larger steaks!

Boneless:  NY Strip, Sirloin and RibEye Steaks.

Roasts:  English, Arm and Chuck

Stew Meat

Swiss Steak & Round Steak

Short Ribs, also good for meaty soups

Tongue,  Liver and Heart

Soup Bones!

ORGANIC OLIVE OIL ~ Fair Trade, too!  Imported by Higher Grounds in Traverse City

Maple Creek Sugars of Fremont

NEW!! We are busy at the farm boiling for 1400 taps! Tate Luchies will be bringing the first of the 2013 Maple Syrup this Saturday, and he will also have order forms on hand if you want to place an order for Grade B Maple Syrup -first come first served.  Grade B is wonderful for health drinks (most of us agree that it contains more minerals), excellent for cooking/baking (richer in flavor, see recipe above), and some people like it better in that it can “go a little further” as most people use less of it due to the slightly richer flavor. We are anticipating a great year!

What is a CSA?

The vendors listed below are all accepting applications for CSA Shares for 2013.

Community Supported Agriculture connects farmers with people who want the freshest, most local produce in-season. It works like a cooperative – you buy a share of the season’s produce and get a variety of vegetables every week of the summer (with extended options for those who want to include fall and spring veggies from hoophouse farmers).  Joining a CSA lets you support a family farm and help them get started early in the spring when capital is most needed. It is by far the most economical way a family can “buy local” and support the movement while getting the freshest, most nutritious produce possible.

Five Oaks Farm of Montague

We still have shares available in several different CSA options including a Main Season, Peak Season, Extended Season and a Bridge Card Share. Contact us at fiveoakscsa@gmail.com

At the market this week:

Ground beef  1 lb pkgs, or our ground special below.

PRE-ORDER OUR GROUND BEEF SPECIAL to be sure to get some!  10 packages for $48.

New item! Ground Beef Patties!  1/4 lb each, 2-4 to a package

Ground Sirloin

Bone-In:  Rib, T-Bone and Porterhouse Steaks

Boneless:  Tenderloin – Do a stir-fry with a small package or grill some larger steaks!

We recently found a package of tenderloin from 2009 on the bottom of the home freezer.  Still as delicious, mouth watering, tender.  Vacuum-packing really keeps beef from getting freezer burn.

Boneless:  NY Strip, Sirloin and RibEye Steaks.

Roasts:  Rolled Rump, Arm and Chuck

Stew Meat

Swiss Steak & Round Steak

Short Ribs, also good for meaty soups

Tongue,  Liver and Heart

Shady Side Farm of Holland

Mike of Shady Side Farm will be at market again this week with his wool products and certified organic beans. It’s maple syrup season, and so we’ll feature the Jacob’s Cattle Gold Beans as our Special of the Week. This week the 2-lb. bags will be available for $10, regularly $11.50. Jacob’s Cattle Gold Beans are eye-catching heirloom beans that are a stabilized cross between Jacob’s Cattle and Paint Beans. This unique bean is gold in color and has white speckled markings. It soaks up flavors well and holds its shape under long cooking.

Mike will also have along Lona’s handwoven rag rugs this week.

Laughing Tree Brick Oven Bakery of Hart

Our friend Debbie is plumb out of her stock of Walnut Batards so it’s time to include them in the rotation for the week.  We’ll bring them to the Sweetwater Local Foods Market this weekend where you’ll also find currant scones, lots of greens grown by a myriad of local farm types, and beautiful art for daily use.  We love being a part of such a dynamic market scene!  Hope to see you there.

This week’s goodies:

Mountain Crunch Granola (pure vanilla, toasted almonds, and organic coconut oil) and Laughing Tree Peanut Butter Granola (all-natural PB, pure vanilla, and Michigan honey).

Both of these granolas are baked in our wood-fired brick oven after the intense bread-baking heat has dissipated (after several days).  They are baked at a low temperature to ensure that the nutrients in the grains and seeds remain intact!  Please note, these granolas are SWEETENED ONLY WITH MICHIGAN HONEY!  There is absolutely no refined sugar in them.

Homesteader’s Wheat (An extraordinary light wheat bread with a wonderfully chewy crust) $5.00

We’re so excited to be offering several different CSA options this season including a Main Season, Peak Season, Extended Season and a Bridge Card Share. Stop by and meet our 2013 Farm Interns, Logan Jancek & Walker Hopkins and get info about our CSA!

Funny Farm of Grant

Long time Muskegon area organic farmers Jim and Barb Loe are offering a CSA again this year.

CJ Veggies of Zeeland

Charles Johnson will be at the market again this week with info about his CSA.

Friends of the Market

If you would like to become a Friend of the Market for a suggested donation of $20.00, which entitles you to a free cup of coffee at every market you attend for a full year, please see me at the market this Saturday! We will also have  Higher Grounds Coffee by the Cup for a suggested donation of $1.00.

PRESS RELEASE   PRESS RELEASE   PRESS RELEASE

What: Screening & Panel Discussion of the documentary film Living Downstream

Where: Muskegon Community College- Stevenson Center, Room 1100

When: Wednesday, March 27th, 6:30pm – 9:00pm

Co-Sponsors: Sweetwater Center for Organic Opportunity &

Living Downstream

Critically acclaimed documentary film details the life and work of biologist and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber

March 11, 2013 – A new documentary film that has met with sold-out shows across the continent, standing ovations in major centers from Boston to Toronto, and rave reviews in media outlets such as The Washington Post, is screening at Muskegon Community College – Stevenson Center  on Wednesday, March 27th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

Like the book on which the film is based, Living Downstream documents the growing body of scientific evidence that links human health with the health of our environment and concludes that the best way to beat cancer is by preventing it in the first place.

Living Downstream is directed by Chanda Chevannes of The People’s Picture Company (The PPC).  “The film follows Sandra, who is on a journey,” says Chanda, “but the chemicals against which she is fighting are also on the move.  We follow these invisible toxins as they migrate to some of the most beautiful places in North America.  We see how these chemicals enter our bodies, and how, once inside, scientists believe they may be working to cause cancer.”

Panel Discussion: Living Downstream and the Movement Towards  Healthier Local Food

After viewing the hour-long documentary there will be a brief intermission followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A period with the audience. Diana Jancek, Director of Sweetwater Center for Organic Opportunity, will moderate. Panelists will include:

Claire Schlaff
Claire worked for Muskegon Public Schools as an occupational therapist from 1978-2002. In response to her son, Doug’s, death of Ewing Sarcoma in 2008 at the age of 35, and news reports of several other young White Lake area residents being diagnosed with cancer, Claire wanted to know more about the causes of cancer and about possible environmental links to cancer. From 2009-2012 she and a group of volunteers conducted the White Lake Area Cancer Mapping Project, and she is currently in communication with organizations about mapping and analysis of the data.

Patrice Bobier
Earthscape Farm & Full Circle Midwifery
Patrice is a farmer and Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), credentialed through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and since 1977 has personally attended over 1400 home births. She and her husband have lived on their 260 acre farm since 1972,  raising kids and grandkids as well as organic meats and vegetables.

Patty Oltean
ImproveAble Feast http://improveablefeast.com/

The Energy of Cancer http://theenergyofcancer.com/
Holding a degree in Environmental Communications, Patty is an athlete, a yoga and pilates instructor, a mom, wife, a cook, and is passionate about connecting the dots between how we treat our planet and how we treat our bodies. She holds workshops in West Michigan for cancer support groups, and for those wanting to learn more about cancer prevention.

The screening is being co-sponsored by Sweetwater Center for Organic Opportunity,  a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Muskegon County whose mission is to educate, advocate and celebrate organic agriculture and food production, both on our farms and in our urban landscapes, and the Muskegon Community College Sustainability Task Force
