For those new to Sweetwater, this newsletter is a list of all vendors who will be attending the market. Their products & prices and contact info are listed so that you can place a preorder with them. It also gives you a chance to start making your shopping list early in the week. On Friday we put out an updated version with items added to the list that will be available for walk up purchasing.

To remind everyone about what is unique about Sweetwater, here is a link to the Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers. This Pledge is signed by all vendors, and we stand behind it. http://www.sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/2015-final-sweetwater-pledge-to-customers-update.pdf

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week we have the following items available for pre-orders:
Ginger: That’s correct—fresh, local, naturally grown ginger, right here in West Michigan. We have limited quantities of this very special crop, so be sure to order your share today: $15 per pound, one-pound minimum order.
“Ohio Red” Garlic: This garlic stock has been handed down through my family from my great-great-great-grandmother. Nice large purple-striped heads with an average of ten cloves per head. Easy to peel. Stored properly, should keep up to six months. Stock up now for winter. $12 per pound, three-pound minimum order.
“Music” Garlic: A popular, widely-available vartiery. Nice large heads with four to five cloves per head. Good garlic flavor. $12 per pound, three-pound minimum order.
In addition, we have grade-A seed garlic available for both varieties for pre-order at $15 a pound.
Veggie Bags: We also will have our popular Veggie Bags available for pre-order. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15. This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: lettuce, bok choi, carrots, turnips, potatoes, onions, and garlic.
To order ginger, garlic, or a Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We also plan to have many, many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Got cast iron? Then you need lard! Lard, either from the fat back or from the leaf fat, is the absolute best way to take care of your cast iron cookware. It conditions it beautifully to create a naturally non-stick surface. Flip eggs with ease; no more prying protein off the griddle. My Mom has little sample cups available along with a recipe to tell you how to render it easily.  That way, you can smell the lack of odor for yourself!
Stay tuned: we are sending 4 pigs and 12 lambs to slaughter this week. Which means you can expect lots of cuts to be back in stock by the November 20 market. Or, if you want to order a whole/half lamb or have a specific cut in mind for the holidays, let me know… ah… by today (Monday). Thank you!

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares.

This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, cabbage, beets, carrots, potatoes, leeks, and garlic. Again, each bag will cost $15.
To order your Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We will also be offering our family heirloom garlic for pre-ordered bulk sales at $12 a pound (three-pound minimum order).

Vendors attending Saturday October 23rd :

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares.

Happy Columbus Day!
We are currently taking pre-orders for rabbit.  I have a limited number available and I will be slaughtering this coming Thursday. If you’d like one fresh, shoot me an email to reserve one.  They can be picked up on Sat. Oct. 16 at Muskegon Farmers Market, Sweetwater Local Foods Market, or by arrangement.  They dress out about 3 lbs and are $9 per lb.  They are whole carcass with heart, liver and kidneys.  If you don’t want the organs, please let me know (they are the best part and I hate to see them wasted- as in, please don’t feed them to your cat- eat them yourself!)  Each rabbit comes with a sheet directing you to how to cut it up (if you wish), cook it, and cook the organs.  Hint: don’t stew it.  I know every website everywhere suggests braising it in some sort of very flavorful and delicious liquid but… don’t.  Just don’t do it.  Grill it.  It’ll blow your mind.  Check out how they are raised here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz8o2uh9Lkw (That video was made when I lived in Wisconsin but I still do the same thing now, but with fewer rabbits.  I downsized when I moved and started my own farm. Go figure!)
Now on!  Boneless Leg of Lamb is 10% off.
Also, we have whole racks of mutton available for $12/lb and mutton chops for $13/lb.

Vendors attending Saturday October 16th :

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, kohlrabi, salad turnips, beets, carrots, potatoes, and garlic.
We also plan to have many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague

Vendors attending Saturday October 9th :

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, salad turnips, carrots, potatoes, leeks, and garlic.
We also plan to have many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

In addition to the 4 pigs going to slaughter on Nov 4, we now have 12 lambs going to a different slaughterhouse, also on Nov 4.  For me, this means a lot of driving and juggling animals in and out of a livestock trailer.  For you, it means lots of choices coming your way!  I predict Sat. Nov. 20 as the day the smorgasbord will be available for purchase.  But!  Don’t wait til then!  Pop a boneless leg of lamb in the crock pot and come home to scrumptiousness.

In other news: this spring wasn’t too bad regarding slaughter availability.  Sadly, this fall it’s back to pandemic pandemonium.  As you’ll see, we are low on a lot of items.  We are working hard to secure dates to send our animals, and we have one in early November for our pigs.  Nothing confirmed for our sheep, yet, but I’ll keep you posted.  So expect many pork cuts and some sausages to appear in the week(s) before Thanksgiving.  Just in time for sausage stuffing!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order
1. Look over the list. Each vendor has a unique deadline for when they need to receive your pre-order depending on their product. Send your pre-order by email to each vendor you want to order from, within their required deadlines.
2. Vendors will respond back by no later than Friday before market day with an order confirmation and an invoice that in most cases will allow you to pre-pay for your order. If a vendor is not set up to take payment online they will accept checks (preferred) or cash in a sealed envelope on market day pickup.
