Friday Update!
Just a reminder: We will be closed the Saturday following Thanksgiving, on Nov. 27th.

We hope your family celebrations are awesome this year – lots to be thankful for! I know for myself at least, I am very thankful just to be here given all the loss from the pandemic, and I’m super grateful to each and every Sweetwater farmer and food producer for all of their hard labor to bring us the best in fresh, local & organic foods!

For those new to Sweetwater, this newsletter is a list of all vendors who will be attending the market on this date. Their products & prices and contact info are listed so that you can place a preorder with them. It also gives you a chance to start making your shopping list early in the week. On Friday we put out an updated version with items added to the list that will be available for walk up purchasing.

To remind everyone about what is unique about Sweetwater, here is a link to the Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers. This Pledge is signed by all vendors, and we stand behind it. http://www.sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/2015-final-sweetwater-pledge-to-customers-update.pdf

As we enter into the days before Thanksgiving, please allow me to say how grateful we have been for our faithful Sweetwater customers this season. I especially was reminded of this last Saturday, when all you good people stood out in the wind and sleet so that you could buy our vegetables. This past season has been a very good one for us, and your faithful patronage has been a large part of that. So, again, thank you.
And an important note: While we hope to attend the market as long as we have vegetables available to sell, this coming Saturday will be the last one we will be guaranteed to be present at. Please plan accordingly.
We should have the following available this Saturday (for walk-up sales only, please):
kale, red and green curly
head lettuce

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
You all are so lucky. At the prompting of a sincere question from a customer, I reviewed the organic standards regarding nitrate/nitrites. Synthetic forms are not allowed in organic products. I do not offer certified organic pork primarily because of slaughterhouse availability and expense. I stop short of that final step. So I looked online to see what would be available. Certified organic bacon is $29 per lb. That actually sounds about right, to be honest. What was more disturbing to me is the number of subscription services that offer products delivered to your doorstep that “you can feel good about.” The beef and sheep do not appear to be grass-fed. The pigs are heritage breed and fed non-GMO but they don’t say anything about being pastured. It IS nice to see that they are transparent about these different practices. My concern is that most eaters don’t know what questions to ask. I am in the industry and I can’t always keep up on the latest trend, or production practice, or understand it thoroughly enough to decide whether or not I think it is good for the animal, the eater, or the earth. They say eating ethically is a choice. What no one says is that the choices cascade exponentially and suddenly you find yourself in an existential crisis. No wonder websites that promise to do all that “choosing” for you are so popular. You all are so lucky that this market is available to you. You get the best of the best, and it also supports the local economy with no shipping charges or materials to waste. We are truly blessed to have Diana to facilitate it and to ask those questions for you, and that we have such a range of phenomenal producers who go way beyond what is mostly available online. To the holiday that celebrates good food (and, you know, so much more): Happy Thanksgiving!
