Sweetwater Community
Thanks to everyone who requested warmer weather this week we will have Asparagus at the market Saturday! Woot!
Changes are coming to the market! Beginning Saturday, May 29th we are expanding the market to 2 hours, from 10am to noon! Pre-orders are still the best way to get the products you want, and also assures your farmers and food producers of enough guaranteed sales to make the trip to market worthwhile.
Also beginning Saturday, May 29th we are going to roll out a market delivery! For $10 per order we will deliver orders to addresses in the Muskegon, Grand Haven & Spring Lake areas on Saturday after the market. Details will be in the Monday, May 25th email!

In case you missed it, here is our Update to Governor’s Mask Resolution: UPDATED, 5/14/21 7:00pm: With the Governor’s recent announcement that the MDHHS is updating the Gatherings and Mask Order to align with the CDC’s latest guidance, face masks will no longer be required to be worn at the outdoor Sweetwater Local Foods Market.
At this point we are asking our vendors to have masks available to be worn if requested to do so by any customer and we intend to maintain our Drive Through market for the foreseeable future in addition to the Walk-in market, which we hope will assure everyone that we are working hard to maintain a safe & positive market experience for all.

We appreciate our market community and the support you have given us while we have navigated this quickly changing situation.
Thank you!

If you’re new to the market, please see instructions along with the map at the bottom of this newsletter for more info on How to Order & Pick Up at Market. Payment is accepted online when you preorder, or cash/check at time of pickup. We will also be sending out a Friday update email for a list of what can be purchased by parking & walking in on Saturday, without preordering.

Blackbird Farms
Coopersville, Michigan
We’re back this week with a variety of herb, flower, and vegetable plants for your garden!
Due to capacity issues, we will be doing **walk-up sales only** for our plant sales at Sweetwater this May (payment via cash, check, or credit card). That said, we fully understand that not everyone is able, willing, or ready for in-person connection at the market yet, and we want to make sure that we are able to serve these individuals as well. The best way for us to do that is via pre-orders that can be **picked up, contact-free, at our farm in Coopersville** at a mutually convenient time in May. For more information on this option, please e-mail us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com, and we will send you the link to our online order form. We understand that this may not be ideal, but we do appreciate your patience as we navigate a busy month ahead with limited staff, time, and resources.  🙂
Thank you for your understanding, and we hope to see you at Sweetwater this Saturday!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC. Our pigs and sheep range on 40 acres in Montague, MI.  The pigs eat certified organic grain (75% corn, 25% soy), are born on the farm, primarily roam in the woods, and get hay and baleage in the winter.  The sheep are 100% grass-fed, are moved daily to a new paddock in the summer, and are also born on the farm.
Cut of the week: pork steak!  This is decidedly not the other white meat.  Our pork is a stunning burgundy because our animals use their muscles.  This cut in particular is marbled with white fat of which you should not be afraid!  A study found that simply moving pigs from concrete to dirt changes the omega 3 – omega 6 profile to the benefit of us, the consumer.*  The pork steak comes from the shoulder of the pig, specifically the butt.  I like them better than chops and I think they are phenomenal grilled.  Try it!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Farm update:
Friday May 14. Abi said, “Mom, there’s a lot of bees flying around that tree.” A quick investigation and we both knew it was a swarm. We hived them and settled back into our respective tasks. I barely refocused. Abi again. “Mom!!! There’s a pig in the backyard!!!!!” (Now, there’s always pigs in the backyard, but her tone indicated it was free ranging.) We ran back outside to find 5 pigs on the loose. We got the pigs in and the geese out and returned inside again. Bill texted me “I’ve got calves walking past the shop door.” What a busy afternoon of maintaining order on the farm!
For those of you who have asked or wondered, 75% of our hives survived that long cold spell this winter. The first swarm of this year was a welcome replacement for the losses.
We will accept orders until 5pm on Friday. We will be able to get totals out Friday evening, hopefully by 8:30 pm. If you don’t get a response from me, please contact me. We accept cash or check payable to Pine Row Farm.

1. Look over the list. Each vendor has a unique deadline for when they need to receive your pre-order depending on their product. Send your pre-order by email to each vendor you want to order from, within their required deadlines.
2. Vendors will respond back by no later than Friday before market day with an order confirmation and an invoice that in most cases will allow you to pre-pay for your order. If a vendor is not set up to take payment online they will accept checks (preferred) or cash in a sealed envelope on market day pickup.
3. Market Day for Park & Walk-in. Please see the map for where you will need to park and enter the market space. You may pick up your pre-orders from each vendor & purchase from additional vendors who have extra products.
4. Market Day For Drive Through Pre-Orders: Please see the  market map with arrows indicating which way you should plan to approach the market. You are basically going to come in to the market the same way as before and then circle the perimeter of the vendor area, exiting the same way you come in. We will also have signs to help point you in the right direction.
5. (Drive Through) Using a sheet of paper at least 8.5 x 11, please list all of the vendors you have orders with in black marker (or something as visible), large enough for vendors to see it clearly.  Please put your first & last name at the top of the list. Tape or hold up the list to the side window or front windshield where it will be most visible.
6. Have your trunk, or designated area of your car ready to receive your goods. A cooler is suggested for refrigerated & frozen items.
7. As you are driving through, each vendor will bring your order to your vehicle and place it in the trunk or other designated space, and collect payment if you have not paid in advance. Again, please have checks (preferred) or cash in a sealed envelope with your name and the name of the vendor on the outside of it.
Covid Protocols are still in place. All vendors will be wearing face masks, and customers who choose to park and walk-in will also be required to wear face masks and maintain 6 ft social distance. Thanks!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)
Thanks!

And about that map. You know what they say about how men refuse to read maps? Turns out women also have their difficulties. Some women, anyway. I actually have been sending drive through customers in the wrong direction! In spite of that our traffic flow went pretty well last week and we LOVED seeing more of you out and walking around (masked and socially distancing, of course!)
For the May 15th market, the map is the same, the person giving directions is corrected, and we hope to see you at the market!

Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC, which uses a wise mix of technology and tradition to produce good meat. Both are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Approved.  Enjoy!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)
Thanks!

Sweetwater Friday Update for Saturday May 8th Farmers Market

Friday Fresh Update List!

Sweetwater Local Foods Market
Drive Through & Walk In Pre-Order Market
Saturday, May 8th, 2021
Limited One Hour Market: 10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.
Sweetwater Community
For this Friday Update, a couple of things to mention. First, don’t forget Moms Day is Sunday! Myself, I’m giving special thanks to all the home quarantined Moms who tackled both work & children this last year – whew! Second, the latest news coming from both CDC & Michigan is showing good progress with declining new cases of Covid & vaccination rates at 44% nationwide for adults having at least one shot, but at 28% here in Muskegon County we have to do better! And even though the restrictions are loosening on outdoor masks, we’ll still be masking up during the market until we hear differently.

Again, with the addition of Park & Walk-In we hope you’ll take a look at the map below and approach the market cautiously & have patience while we adjust to the new layout.

Below you will find items new & still available for preorder, along with deadlines for those orders. You can add to an existing order or put in a new one! Please note the time deadlines of each vendor and contact them as soon as possible.
Payment is the same: online when you preorder, or cash/check at time of pickup.

NOTE: If you are new to Sweetwater, please see instructions at the bottom of this newsletter for more info on How to Order & Pick Up at Market
Thanks!

Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC, which uses a wise mix of technology and tradition to produce good meat. Both are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Approved.  Enjoy!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)

STAY IN TOUCH!
If you have not already done so you may want to sign up for the newsletter

Sweetwater Saturday May 8th Farmers Market

Sweetwater Local Foods Market

DriveThrough & Walk-in Pre-Order Market
Saturday, May 8th 2021
Limited One Hour Market: 10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.
Sweetwater Community
Spring is really ramping up here at Sweetwater! This week we are adding a brand new Muskegon farm to the family: The Woven Farmstead! And Blackbird Farm will be back with garden plants, & Wormies will have the perfect soil amendments….whew!
Our first trial last Saturday with both Drive Through & Walk in went pretty well. But PLEASE do take a look at the map below for directions!
Unless a farm prefers not to, we will still be taking pre-orders and the market will still be just one hour until the arrival of our vegetable vendors later in the month. Many of the vendors will also have extra items along with them for purchase the day of the market.
As for Covid protocols, at this point in time farmers markets are still required to maintain the required 6ft social distance as well as requiring masks for both vendors and customers walking in.
Please know this is all a work in progress; if something about this new arrangement doesn’t work we will continue to make changes until we have something that the majority of you are all comfortable with.
If you’re new to the market, please see instructions along with the map at the bottom of this newsletter for more info on How to Order & Pick Up at Market. Payment is accepted online when you preorder, or cash/check at time of pickup.

NEW VENDOR!
The Woven Farmstead of Muskegon
Hello! My name is Sam, and I am the owner, and sole farmer of The Woven Farmstead. The Woven Farmstead is a part of a trifecta business called The Woven Trifecta, and is focused on intertwining wellness within nurture, nature, and nutrition.
The Woven Farmstead is a half acre urban farm in Muskegon, MI growing a wide variety of veggies, herbs, and cut flowers, as well as raising chickens and quail for eggs. All products are Certified Naturally Grown, and grown with love.
I am a first generation farmer with a dream of ‘growing flowers and being happy’ and to grow good food for my community. Prior to starting my own farm, I spent time as a farm hand on other local farms, as well as served as farm manager within a local organization managing both production as well as programming. I am excited to be growing good food and contributing to our local food system.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)

STAY IN TOUCH!
If you have not already done so you may want to sign up for the newsletter
to be informed of the pre-order schedule for the next market.

Many of the vendors will also have extra items along with them for purchase the day of the market.
As for Covid protocols, farmers markets are required to maintain a 6ft social distances as well as requiring masks for both vendors and customers walking in.
Please know this is all a work in progress; if something about this new arrangement doesn’t work we will continue to make changes until we have something that the majority of you are all comfortable with.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC, which uses a wise mix of technology and tradition to produce good meat. Both are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Approved.  Enjoy!

Beginning May 1st we will be re-arranging our market to make space for customer parking and walking in for those who want to pick up their pre-orders, or see what is available for extras and want to do so on foot. We will still have drive through, but please do check the new parking lot map next week that will explain it all. It’s been a over a year since we’ve had anything close to normal at our market so we’re all pretty excited to try this. We will have to limit the number and spacing at each booth and of course masks will be a must for everyone, but since the market will stay at one hour until we get more vegetable vendors I think we can handle whatever problems might pop up.
If you’re new to the market, please see instructions at the bottom of this newsletter for more info on How to Order & Pick Up at Market. Payment is accepted online when you preorder, or cash/check at time of pickup.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC, which uses a wise mix of technology and tradition to produce good meat. Both are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Approved.  Enjoy!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC, which uses a wise mix of technology and tradition to produce good meat. Both are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Approved.  Enjoy!
