In Praise of the Humble Parsnip & Other Great Roots!

Parsnip quiche, anyone? You’ll find great recipe ideas for the wonderful roots at the market this week!

About apples….many customers have been asking where the apples are this season. Conversations with several growers tell us that this spring’s weird hot weather and then successive frosts severely set back the organic apple season this year. There is hope, however. If you don’t mind a drive, Cherry Pointe Market in Shelby has apples that have been grown without chemicals for over 3 years; she is not considering certification at this point but they are grown according to NOP regs. http://www.cherrypointmarket.net/contactus.htm

Also, Fruitful Acres, our normal apple vendor, has had a disappointing season for fresh apples and is processing organic Apple Cider as I write this; they plan to be at the next market.

To meet the demand for fresh apples, Jim Olson will be bringing nearly a hundred pounds of Mutsu & Red Delicious apples he harvested from a neighbors orchard. The orchardist decided not to bother with spraying at all this year, so they may not be picture perfect but they will be unsprayed. We will continue to search for more organic sources to bring you the kind of fruit you expect at Sweetwater.
