After a weekend off spent settling into our new place, we are pleased and excited to be back at Sweetwater this weekend! (Thank you to everyone who has wished us well throughout this leg of Crow Feather’s journey; we haven’t found our stable home yet but we are certainly not giving up!)
This week at market we will be offering:
Baby Lettuce AND Brassica salad mix – get it while it’s good!
Sweet rutabega (try the leafy tops – they are much too good to waste!)
“Sugar” baking Pumpkins – now is the time to crank up the oven for pumpkin roll, bread, cookies, scones, pancakes, muffins; I could go on all day.
Sweet potatoes from our hoophouse – they are finally fully cured so they are delectably sweet and totally storable.
With the weather beginning to cool off noticeably, look for Carolyn’s Knits on the table – throughout the fall we will be bringing baby items, hats, fingerless mitts, and many others. These one-of-a-kind handcrafted items make perfect locally sourced gifts – or a cozy self-indulgence.

Funny Farm of Grant
This is the last month for WIC Project Fresh, you must use them by Oct 31.
This week we’ll have lots of Winter Squash including heirlooms like Thelma Sanders, Candy Roaster, Spaghetti, Sweet Meat, Butternut and more!
We got frost and freeze this week, that means we strip-picked the peppers. Bulk baskets of sweet peppers at bargain prices! Red, yellow and green sweet peppers ready to go in your freezer for winter meals.
Watermelons! We’re near the end of these.

The next CSA share is planned for the 31st. No tricks, just delicious organically grown treats! You can expect a bountiful array of mixed and salad greens and possibly some early root veggies. Everyone will receive eggs too!

Shady Side Farm of Holland
Gorgeous weather has allowed us to continue to harvest beans. Some of the varieties have yielded well, and others are a bit disappointing.
We have a few beans left from last year! Stock up on last year’s varieties for only $5/lb., while supplies last. This week Lona will be at market with our certified organic beans in the following varieties:
Black Calypso (fresh) – Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips. Also known as Orca beans–they look like killer whales (only smaller, and more friendly).
Black Valentine (fresh) – Black beans are back! Taste like kidney beans, great for salads, soups and dips.
Hidatsa Red (fresh) – Slight nutty taste, use in chili or red beans and rice.
Hutterite Soup (fresh) – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Jacob’s Cattle (last year’s, almost gone) – Big and meaty, taste & texture of new potatoes, traditional baked beans, chili.
Jacob’s Cattle Gold (last year’s, almost gone) – Hold shape w/ long cooking, soak up other flavors well, soups and stews.
October (last year’s, almost gone) – Creamy, velvety smooth texture, nutty, sweet flavor, thin skin, soups or chili.
Pinto (fresh) – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
Yellow Indian Woman (fresh, VERY limited quantities) – Rich, creamy interior–similar to eating a good triple cream cheese, but without the fat or calories. Keeps their shape well. If you want Yellow Indian Woman beans, you’re going to have to get them this fall. Because of the very limited quantities, we will not be selling these beans in bulk.
In addition, we’ll have Grassfield Farms raw aged cheeses along in the following flavors:
Aged Cheddar – You asked, and we listened! A sharp cheddar, aged a year. Award-winning!
Chili – Gouda with Red Chili flakes, this mild and creamy cheese has delightful spice without being too hot.
Country Dill – A house favorite, the dill herb in Gouda well represents the fresh grass that dominates the cows’ diet.
Edam – A variety of Gouda made with skim milk: Elastic, yet firm, this flawless low fat cheese is our best melter, improving any dish.
Garlic & Onion – The most aromatic of herbs. Don’t be the only one in the room to eat this spiced Gouda or you soon will be.
Gouda – A traditional handmade cheese in keeping with West Michigan’s (and our family’s) Dutch culture.
Lamont Cheddar – A rare, natural rind English cheese, named for the Grand River’s first settlement near our farm.
Leyden – Originally from the Rhine Valley, now the Grand River Valley; cumin perfectly compliments this aged Dutch cheese.

Join our Local Roots program that allows you to save .25 a pound on all potato (and sweet potato) purchases this season (typically through early spring when we are out of potatoes). Buy one of our Maple Moon potato sacks and every time you bring it to market, you receive .25 off each pound you buy. -Trombicino-a delicious Italian squash that is very similar in flavor and texture to a Butternut. These are a unique squash, that you won’t find in stores. If you like Butternut, give these a try.
-Buttercup-a delicious little desert squash, with dry creamy flesh. Our favorite for baking and mashing.
*EGGS our new flock is laying! This means we have lots more eggs to offer. They are still laying the first, smaller pullet eggs (about 2/3 the size of a normal egg). These are loaded with lots of nutrients!! We are offering these eggs in 18 count for $4
Our older hens are still laying, medium to large eggs, and we offer these in 12 count for $4
We’ve been busy all season gathering and drying herbs for our teas, and the first of them are ready! All the herbs we use are grown organically or ethically wildcrafted.
