Sweetwater Saturday November 21st One Hour Pre-order Drive Through Farmers Market

Sweetwater Local Foods Market

DRIVE-THROUGH Pre-Order Market
Saturday, November 21st 2020
Limited One Hour Market: 10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.
CLOSED Saturday After Thanksgiving, November 28th

Sweetwater Community
So, how are YOU doing? Every Saturday as I stand guard at the market entrance in my new role as Market Greeter (lol), everyone asks the same thing: how are you doing?  The uncertainty of these times makes that a tougher question to answer than usual, but I hope we can all keep asking it of each other. This is a time that is testing all of us, and the more we can come up with ways to lift each other up, the better we’ll all be.
Granted these last weeks have been awful, in terms of seeing the virus surge, deaths surge, our hospitals and medical staffs being pushed past capacity. My grandson’s mom is a nurse, got covid, took 2 weeks off and is now back at it. She asked me to plead with everyone to please wear masks and social distance. The medical profession is bearing an outsize burden of responsibility for caring for people sickened by covid. The least we can do is not spread it. I am thankful for the Sweetwater Community in this regard.
Whatever your Thanksgiving celebration turns out to be, have a nice meal, help out your local food producers and make it as local as you can. And please, stay well!

We are CLOSED the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28th, as usual. We’ll be open every Saturday after that.

New! Coming Wednesday November 25th – Sweetwater Shop Local Christmas Gift Edition! Sweetwater vendors are preparing special gift items for you! Watch for this special gift edition every Wednesday beginning Nov 25th until Christmas!

Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: head lettuce, cut greens (probably spinach but possibly baby kale), mini-cabbage, Brussels sprouts, pie pumpkin, garlic, and celeriac (don’t worry if this vegetable is unfamiliar to you, I will provide storage and preparation suggestions). Again, each bag will cost $15. (Please note that due to the variability of the weather this time of year, the contents of the bag might be a little more in flux than in other seasons. I will try to hew as close to this list as I can, but substitutions may occur.)
This week we also will have a few vegetables available for pre-order:
–fresh ginger: $20 per pound (1/4 pound minimum)
–Music garlic: : $15 per pound (1/2 pound minimum order)
–head lettuce, red and green: $2.50 each
–arugula: 1/4 pound bag for $3
–Brussels sprouts: $3 per stalk
We will also have very limited quantities of seed garlic, both Music and Anna Barbara’s Ohio Red, for $15 per pound.

Pints $10
Fall Pork
We raised pigs with certified organic feed from Heritage Organics, and are selling them only by halves. A half in the freezer is typically 60-70# of pork. We have a couple of halves that will be smaller, if space is a consideration. Pork will be ready for pickup in November. If you would still like to order, please contact us.
See you Saturday!
Thanks,

Ludwig Farmstead Creamery of Fifthian, IL
For this week choose from :
Kickapoo named after the State Park which is near the creamery, and the Native American Kickapoo tribe that was prominent in this area.  Kickapoo cheese is a Ludwig original recipe.  Kickapoo is a semi-hard, raw milk cheese reminiscent of an aged Parmesan, with  fresh, buttery flavors and a sharper finish.  It has a distinctive green rind.
Vermilion River Blue The scenic Vermilion River flows close to Ludwig Farmstead Creamery and was the inspiration for naming this great cheese. Vermilion River Blue is a triple cream cheese with a soft creamy texture punctuated with gentle notes of blue.
Sangamon Double Cream Named after a beautiful Illinois river, Sangamon is a smooth & firm, but still melt-in-your-mouth cheese. Made with day-fresh milk and added cream, Sangamon melts well as a recipe ingredient.
Jakes Havarti A raw milk, semi-soft cheese that melts well, favorite of the founder Jacob Ludwig.
Jakes Havarti Herb Dill, garlic, and chervil give this semi soft creamy cheese a fresh herb taste.
All cheese comes in 4-5 oz wedges for $6.00 each.

Sweetwater Curated Local Foods
There is an order going in for the list below on Wednesday by noon. Please email back at sweetwaterlocalfoods@gmail.com if there is something you want so I can be sure to include it in the order. Thanks!
New! Ludwig Farmstead Creamery of Fifthian, IL
Longtime customers will remember the great cheese we used to carry from Grassfields of Coopersville. Since they stopped production a few years ago we have not been able to locate a good local replacement. My salesperson at Cherry Capital sent me samples from Ludwig Farmstead Creamery and I have to tell you I’m making an exception to our Michigan local for this one! The farm is 300 miles away, in Fifthian, IL (pop 485). They milk around 65 cows from their herd of Holsteins, and the farm is Certified Humane for their grassfed operation. This means the cows diet is exclusively grass & forage with no grains or grain by-products allowed. Learn more about how the cows are treated here: https://www.ludwigfarmsteadcreamery.com/our-cows  and the strict standards for Certified Humane, including feed requirements here: https://certifiedhumane.org/wp-content/uploads/HFAC-Dairy-Cattle-Standards_20-2.pdf
All cheese comes in 5 oz wedges for $6.00 each.
