Selections From Webster’s Chicktionary

hen. b) received on the back of the hand while prematurely collecting eggs from under a
hen.
BIRD BRAIN – The most sophisticated brain developed thus far in the evolutionary
process Therefore used as a compliment.
CHICKEN-HEARTED – akin to Maitre or “Loving Kindness” in Buddhism.

with the flirtatious sashay used by mischievous hens in red comb districts often located
within shady corners of the barn yard.

As many of you know, we lost a whole field of dry beans last fall at harvest time. We have 10 varieties missing from our line-up. In an effort to give our customers a little more selection, we’ve swapped beans with another farmer from the thumb area of Michigan. Kevin from Sheridan Acres is transitioning to organic, and his beans have been grown without the use of chemicals. These varieties include:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Dapple Grey – You’ll have to let me know about these beans—I haven’t cooked with them yet!
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
In addition, we will have our own certified organic beans:
Bean Medley – A mixture of several of our beans, good for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
If you are interested in bulk orders of beans (5# or more of any one kind), please email me to inquire about prices and to place your order.

Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta
Our corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated corn that dates back to the 1850s. After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Handwoven Rag Rugs — The calendar says it’s spring. I’ve been weaving, and maybe you want something new and springy to dress your floors with? Check out my selection of washable rag rugs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Products — I’ll have dryer balls along, but if there is something else you are interested in (socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and your emails help me to know what to take along…

An Overheard Conversation in the Henhouse…..
Lucy Leghorn asked “What the cluck is up with giving rabbits the credit for Easter Eggs?
I mean, we work so hard, lay in, lay out and once a year people finally celebrate eggs and
the rabbit gets all the credit”
Amy Araucona replied “and those tacky artificial colors, really, who can beat our
wonderful greens, olives and blues.”
Isa Brown exclaimed “don’t forget, my browns are every bit as beautiful.”
Sir Rooster proclaimed “ In all reality, the color of the egg is only shell deep. Wholesome
beauty is to the yolk.”
Lucy replied “Yeah, yeah, that’s all well and good but the world is getting weird when
rabbits lay eggs and buffalos have wings. Before you know it folks will actually believe
the cow jumped over the moon.”
Amy asked “ She didn’t?”
We’ll see you with:
Multicolored, multi-sized eggs (chicken, duck and goose)
Frozen Chicken
PS. Our chickens sleep in the barn or enclosure at night. They are free to roam the
pasture during daylight. Their diet is supplemented with local certified organic feed
(Grice Farms), our own alfalfa hay, oyster shells as a calcium source and organic scratch
feed from Shady Lane Farm. Organic apples and various organic food scraps from our
kitchen are used as treats.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Products — I’ll have dryer balls along, but if there is something else you are interested in (socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and your emails help me to know what to take along…
Greetings to the Sweetwater Community (those who are healthy eaters
and have glowing smiles)
The winners of our “Why did the chicken cross the road” drawing are:
Sandy Blackwell, one frozen chicken
Collette Thibault, one flat of eggs
Thank you everyone for participating in our inconsequential and
irrelevant research project.  Unfortunately we cannot report solid
results as the responses were each unique and there was no consensus.
However, several participants suggested the rooster was somehow
involved. Research will have to continue; we may never know what goes
on in that little chicken brain.
A special thank you to Dr. Kathryn Niemeyer for her one page
dissertation on analytical methods and bringing to our attention the
many variables that might be incorporated for this seemingly simple
yet potentially complex study.  In our gratitude for going above and
As many of you know, we lost a whole field of dry beans last fall at harvest time. We have 10 varieties missing from our line-up. In an effort to give our customers a little more selection, we’ve swapped beans with another farmer from the thumb area of Michigan. Kevin from Sheridan Acres is transitioning to organic, and his beans have been grown without the use of chemicals. These varieties include:
Black Calypso – Plump, with creamy texture. Slightly nutty, mellow taste, something like a russet potato.
Dapple Grey – You’ll have to let me know about these beans—I haven’t cooked with them yet!
Hutterite Soup – Comfort food, cook fast, creamy soup, baby food.
Pinto – Earthy flavor, great in Mexican cooking, falls apart under long cooking.
In addition, we will have our own certified organic beans:
Bean Medley – A mixture of several of our beans, good for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
If you are interested in bulk orders of beans (5# or more of any one kind), please email me to inquire about prices and to place your order.
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta
Our corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated corn that dates back to the 1850s. After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds
Wool Products — We will be taking preorders for wool-filled comforters and pillows at the market this Saturday. The comforters slip inside your duvet cover, and are delightfully warm and light. Pre-orders require a $50 deposit, and your items will be ready in 2-3 months. I’ll also have dryer balls along, but if there is something else you are interested in (socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and your emails help me to know what to take along…
Our “Why did the Chicken Cross the Road” drawing will be held this Saturday at 11 am.
If you are present and your name is drawn you can take your winnings then and there.
Otherwise we will contact you and you can pick up your winnings Saturday, March 17.
Winners will be listed in next week’s newsletter. All entries will be randomly drawn for
a whole frozen chicken and flat of eggs. Good luck!
Due to warmer weather and longer days the chickens are more productive with their egg
laying endeavors. Also, they’re spending more time outside foraging in the now thawing
soil scratching for goodies. Dust baths are now a more common occurrence.
We will be there with:
Eggs, (brown, green and white)
Whole Frozen Chicken, 6-8 lbs.
Our chickens sleep in the barn or enclosure at night. They are free to roam the pasture
New Vendor!
Green Morning Farm of Mears
Hello Sweetwater! My name is Ian and I am the owner/grower/operator of Green Morning Farm in Mears, Michigan. I specialize in growing high quality & flavor packed microgreens for West Michigan area restaurants, grocery stores and farmers markets. Coming from a culinary background, I was first introduced to microgreens as a garnish in high end restaurants and as time progressed I began to learn more about the incredible health benefits they provide. Harvested at the first true leaf stage, microgreens can have up to 40 times the nutrient density of their mature counterparts. Depending on variety, microgreens go from seed to harvest in 10-21 days. All Green Morning Farm microgreens are grown indoors using natural methods.
MICROGREENS LINEUP FOR 3/3:
SUNFLOWER –  A Complete Protein, Sunflower Shoots contain all the essential amino acids and are loaded with antioxidants, B Complex, C, D, E, Calcium, Zinc, & Iron. A true superfood! Nutty flavor reminiscent of sunflower seeds with a silky texture and big time crunch. Perfect for sandwiches, salads & wraps. Great for juicing. The list goes on. Kids love them!
SWEET PEA – High in Vitamins A, C, Antioxidants & Beta Carotene. Sweet and tender, Pea Shoots are quite versatile as they are fantastic raw or cooked. Used extensively is Asian cuisines, they lend themselves nicely to stir frys, soups and are delicious sautéed on their own as a side dish. Excellent for juicing.
RADISH – A blend of Red Rambo & China Rose, radish micros are high in Vitamins A, B, C, E, K, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium & Zinc. Tender shoots with the kick you expect from a radish. A perfect way to add some spice & color to salads, sandwiches & wraps. Great on tacos!
All microgreens are packed in 2oz clamshell containers and priced at 1 for $3, 2 for $5, mix and match all you like. More varieties are in the works and will be be available in the coming weeks. I look forward to seeing you at the market!
There is still time to enter into our drawing. You can participate in our avian
sociological research project by answering the endless question “Why does the chicken
cross the road”. Give us your answer along with your name and phone number and you
will be entered into a random drawing. First drawn entry will win a whole frozen
chicken, the second, a flat (2 ½ doz.) of eggs. The drawing will take place Saturday,
March 10 at 11 AM at the Market. Winners will be notified by phone and published in
the Sweetwater weekly email. Prizes can be picked up on Saint Patrick’s Day at the
Market.
Due to the numerous clever and creative entries received thus far, we have decided to
further recognize (by a flock of fowl committee members) unique and distinguished
responses with a dozen eggs. So think wide, think far, get inspired…..perhaps your entry
will be rewarded as well.
We will be there this Saturday with:
Whole frozen Chicken from 6 to 8 lbs.
Eggs
PS. Our birds are kept in the barn at night and are free to roam outside during the day.
We supplement their diet with local certified organic feed from Grice Farms and treats of
organic apples and alfalfa hay.
Thank you for recycling egg cartons and more importantly your considerate patronage to
Sweetwater Market.
Shady Side Farm of Holland
This week we will be at market with our certified organic beans:
Bean Medley – A mixture of several of our beans, good for soup.
Black Turtle – Common black bean with a thick skin and a meaty texture.
Green Flageolet – Creamy, firm texture and a sweet mellow flavor. A quick-cooking bean. (Limited supply.)
Hidatsa Red – Similar to a kidney bean but with a slightly nutty taste, these beans are good in salads, chilis, soups or served with grains.
Painted Lady – Slightly sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture.
Yellow Indian Women – These buttery beans retain their shape well, and are less starchy than some other beans. Good all purpose bean.
Zebra – Smooth, creamy texture, full-bodied flavor, good all-purpose bean.
If you are interested in bulk orders of beans (5# or more of any one kind), please email me to inquire about prices and to place your order.
Corn Meal & Grits/Polenta
Our corn is Wapsie Valley, which is a yellow & red open pollinated corn that dates back to the 1850s. After harvest we carefully clean our corn, removing broken kernels and other seeds that have gotten mixed in. It’s then delivered to the DeZwaan Windmill in Holland, where it is stone ground and made into grits/polenta or corn meal. Since no preservatives are added, it’s best to keep our corn products refrigerated or frozen. For more info on hybrid & open pollinated see http://blog.seedsavers.org/blog/open-pollinated-heirloom-and-hybrid-seeds
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wool Products — If there is something you want (dryer balls, socks, mittens, yarn, roving), please send me an email to let me know. I can’t take everything, and it helps me to know what to take along…
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shearing Day — Next Saturday, March 3, we will host our annual sheep shearing event from 9-3. Come anytime during the day, and stay as long as you’d like. Dress warmly and in old clothing—we shear in a barn! Timothy Wright will be doing the shearing for us. We are located at 13275 Blair Street, Holland, 49424, just off US-31 south of West Olive.
Scholl Farm of Montague
Fake News Alert
insight concerning the eternal question that has perplexed civilized man since the
beginning of agrarian times: Why did the chicken cross the road?
True News Alert
They are asking participants to write their answers and submit them including their name
and phone number at their market table this Saturday and next. Those who aid them in
this important research endeavor will be entered into a drawing. First drawn submission
will win a free frozen chicken. Second drawn will receive a free flat of eggs. Drawing
will be held at 10 am, March *** at the Sweetwater Market.
