Friday Update!
Just a reminder: We will be closed the Saturday following Thanksgiving, on Nov. 27th.

We hope your family celebrations are awesome this year – lots to be thankful for! I know for myself at least, I am very thankful just to be here given all the loss from the pandemic, and I’m super grateful to each and every Sweetwater farmer and food producer for all of their hard labor to bring us the best in fresh, local & organic foods!

For those new to Sweetwater, this newsletter is a list of all vendors who will be attending the market on this date. Their products & prices and contact info are listed so that you can place a preorder with them. It also gives you a chance to start making your shopping list early in the week. On Friday we put out an updated version with items added to the list that will be available for walk up purchasing.

To remind everyone about what is unique about Sweetwater, here is a link to the Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers. This Pledge is signed by all vendors, and we stand behind it. http://www.sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/2015-final-sweetwater-pledge-to-customers-update.pdf

This past season has been a very good one for us, and your faithful patronage has been a large part of that. So, again, thank you.
And an important note: While we hope to attend the market as long as we have vegetables available to sell, this coming Saturday will be the last one we will be guaranteed to be present at. Please plan accordingly.

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
You all are so lucky. At the prompting of a sincere question from a customer, I reviewed the organic standards regarding nitrate/nitrites. Synthetic forms are not allowed in organic products. I do not offer certified organic pork primarily because of slaughterhouse availability and expense. I stop short of that final step. So I looked online to see what would be available. Certified organic bacon is $29 per lb. That actually sounds about right, to be honest. What was more disturbing to me is the number of subscription services that offer products delivered to your doorstep that “you can feel good about.” The beef and sheep do not appear to be grass-fed. The pigs are heritage breed and fed non-GMO but they don’t say anything about being pastured. It IS nice to see that they are transparent about these different practices. My concern is that most eaters don’t know what questions to ask. I am in the industry and I can’t always keep up on the latest trend, or production practice, or understand it thoroughly enough to decide whether or not I think it is good for the animal, the eater, or the earth. They say eating ethically is a choice. What no one says is that the choices cascade exponentially and suddenly you find yourself in an existential crisis. No wonder websites that promise to do all that “choosing” for you are so popular. You all are so lucky that this market is available to you. You get the best of the best, and it also supports the local economy with no shipping charges or materials to waste. We are truly blessed to have Diana to facilitate it and to ask those questions for you, and that we have such a range of phenomenal producers who go way beyond what is mostly available online. To the holiday that celebrates good food (and, you know, so much more): Happy Thanksgiving!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Hi all! We are expecting to pick up pork this week. We picked up lamb last week. I would like to wait until I have the products inventoried to send you all a list of items available. That might be as early as this Friday, or it might be the week after Thanksgiving when Sweetwater resumes. Regardless, my Mom will be there on the 20th a freezer full of our vast array of delightful pork and lamb offerings. However, if you miss that market and find yourself in dire need of good meat for your guests (and you’re tired of turkey) on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we will be at the Muskegon market.
Thank you all! I am so grateful for you and this gem of a market!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday Update for Walk Ins!
First, a couple of dates to remember: Sweetwater will be CLOSED the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 27th, and also Christmas Day & New Years Day both fall on Saturday so we will be closed for those two days as well.

As always, if your time on Saturday is precious we won’t waste any of it! Shopping for the best in fresh, local & organic foods for your family is as easy as contacting the vendors with your pre-orders and stopping by the market on Saturday from 10am to 11am to pick it up! Before bacon returns next week, consider making it yourself with our pork belly. We have it fresh (meaning not smoked although it is frozen) and in stock. If you don’t have a smoker, ask for it for Christmas!! Or, vice versa, if you have a person who has everything, consider giving the gift of culinary creativity in the form of an eight pound slab of side pork, skin on, ready for anything your gourmand wants it to be. Sweetwater Saturday November 13th Farmers Market

Sweetwater Local Foods Market

Saturday, November 13th, 2021
10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.

Monday Preorder time!
Liberty Farm has certified organic Cortland apples from Hackerts farm this week. Blackbird is taking preorders for baby ginger and two kinds of garlic. Laughing Tree needs your bread orders in by 6pm Tuesday!

A couple of dates to remember: Sweetwater will be CLOSED the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 27th, and also Christmas Day & New Years Day both fall on Saturday so we will be closed for those two days as well.

As always, if your time on Saturday is precious we won’t waste any of it! Shopping for the best in fresh, local & organic foods for your family is as easy as contacting the vendors with your pre-orders and stopping by the market on Saturday from 10am to 11am to pick it up! Of course, if you like to linger we’ll have plenty of things to buy without a preorder, so come on by!

Vendors attending Saturday November 13th:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
This week we have the following items available for pre-orders:
Ginger: That’s correct—fresh, local, naturally grown ginger, right here in West Michigan. We have limited quantities of this very special crop, so be sure to order yours today: $15 per pound, one-pound minimum order.
“Ohio Red” Garlic: This garlic stock has been handed down through my family from my great-great-great-grandmother. Nice large purple-striped heads with an average of ten cloves per head. Easy to peel. Stored properly, should keep up to six months. Stock up now for winter. $12 per pound, three-pound minimum order.
“Music” Garlic: A popular, widely-available vartiery. Nice large heads with four to five cloves per head. Good garlic flavor. $12 per pound, three-pound minimum order.
In addition, we have grade-A seed garlic available for both varieties for pre-order at $15 a pound.
To order ginger or garlic, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We also plan to have many, many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Got cast iron? Then you need lard! Lard, either from the fat back or from the leaf fat, is the absolute best way to take care of your cast iron cookware. It conditions it beautifully to create a naturally non-stick surface. Flip eggs with ease; no more prying protein off the griddle. My Mom has little sample cups available along with a recipe to tell you how to render it easily.  That way, you can smell the lack of odor for yourself!
Stay tuned: we are sending 4 pigs and 12 lambs to slaughter this week. Which means you can expect lots of cuts to be back in stock by the November 20 market. Or, if you want to order a whole/half lamb or have a specific cut in mind for the holidays, let me know… ah… by today (Monday). Thank you!

“Music” Garlic: A popular, widely-available vartiery. Nice large heads with four to five cloves per head. Good garlic flavor. $12 per pound, three-pound minimum order.
In addition, we have grade-A seed garlic available for both varieties for pre-order at $15 a pound.
Veggie Bags: We also will have our popular Veggie Bags available for pre-order. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15. This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: lettuce, bok choi, carrots, turnips, potatoes, onions, and garlic.
To order ginger, garlic, or a Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday.

Thank you!

This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, cabbage, beets, carrots, potatoes, leeks, and garlic. Again, each bag will cost $15.
To order your Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We will also be offering our family heirloom garlic for pre-ordered bulk sales at $12 a pound (three-pound minimum order).
We also plan to have many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

Oct. 16 at Muskegon Farmers Market, Sweetwater Local Foods Market, or by arrangement.  They dress out about 3 lbs and are $9 per lb.  They are whole carcass with heart, liver and kidneys.  If you don’t want the organs, please let me know (they are the best part and I hate to see them wasted- as in, please don’t feed them to your cat- eat them yourself!)  Each rabbit comes with a sheet directing you to how to cut it up (if you wish), cook it, and cook the organs.  Hint: don’t stew it.  I know every website everywhere suggests braising it in some sort of very flavorful and delicious liquid but… don’t.  Just don’t do it.  Grill it.  It’ll blow your mind.  Check out how they are raised here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz8o2uh9Lkw (That video was made when I lived in Wisconsin but I still do the same thing now, but with fewer rabbits.  I downsized when I moved and started my own farm. Go figure!)
Now on!  Boneless Leg of Lamb is 10% off.
Also, we have whole racks of mutton available for $12/lb and mutton chops for $13/lb.
Finally, advance notice: we will not be at Sweetwater on Oct. 23, but we will be at Muskegon Farmers Market.
