Sweetwater Local Foods Market

Saturday, September 25th, 2021
10:00am to 11:00am
Mercy Health Lakes Village
6401 Harvey St. at US31/Pontaluna Rd.

The weather might be trying to fool us, but nothing says fall like piles of beautiful tasty winter squash in all colors, shapes & sizes! Funny Farm returns this week! Earthscape is bringing their famous broccoli & eggplant, Scholl Farm has our favorite, Delicata squash, and new vendor Mannor Farm is returning as well.

A new customer asked what was unique about Sweetwater, so we thought we would post a link to our Sweetwater Pledge to Our Customers. This Pledge is signed by all vendors, and we stand behind it. http://www.sweetwaterlocalfoodsmarket.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/2015-final-sweetwater-pledge-to-customers-update.pdf

As always, if your time on Saturday is precious we won’t waste any of it! Shopping for the best in fresh, local & organic foods for your family is as easy as contacting the vendors with your pre-orders and stopping by the market on Saturday from 10am to 11am to pick it up! Of course, if you like to linger we’ll have plenty of things to buy without a preorder, so come on by!

If you’re new to the market, please see instructions along with the map at the bottom of this newsletter for more info on How to Place a Pre-Order & Pick Up at Market. We will also be sending out a Friday update email as a reminder and to list any new products.

NEW FARM!
The Mannor Farm of Hesperia
Our little farm is located on 25 acres in Oceana County southwest of Hesperia in the Manistee National Forest. We are bordered on three sides by forest and a small farm to the north. We are 3 miles from the White River and Pines Point CampGround. We originally come from very different backgrounds. Dan was raised on a small farm in Oceana County, Michigan while Linda was raised in Staten Island, New York. We have had several small farms over the past 45 years and have raised beef cattle, sheep, and hay. We have always had a garden and tried to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle. We have always tried to grow our livestock and food as naturally as possible. In 2012, we started raising squash and garlic on Dan’s parents’ old farm that was sold to the local supermarket.  In 2017, we purchased our current place and since it had not been farmed in over 40 years, decided to manage it naturally in a sustainable manner. We are Certified Naturally Grown and use no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides (we meet or exceed all USDA Organic standards).  We currently raise a variety of vegetables including garlic, onions, peppers, eggplant, chinese (Napa) cabbage, squash, kohlrabi, and beans.  We also raise field corn and Indian corn.  Dan is a retired accountant and Linda is a retired nurse. For more info: https://certified.naturallygrown.org/producers/6190

Vendors attending Saturday September 18th :

This week we have available:
Red Chinese (napa) cabbage  $3.00 per head
Green Chinese (Napa) cabbage $3.00 per head
Kohlrabi (green)   $1.00 each
Kohlrabi (purple)  $1.00 each
Spaghetti Squash (small 1.5 – 2.5 lb each – some may be little bigger or smaller)  $2.00 each
Elephant Garlic  $4.00 per bulb
Hardneck Garlic (Music)  $2.00 per bulb
Garlic Granules  Net wt 2 oz bottle   $7.00 each
Onion Flakes  Net wt 3.8 oz bottle  $6.00 each
Crushed Hot Pepper Net wt 1.2 oz bottle  $5.00 each
Dried Whole Black Hungarian Peppers (like a Jalapeno Pepper)  1/2 oz  $2.00
Ancho (dried Poblano) Peppers  1/2 oz  $2.00
All the produce is Certified Naturally Grown.
For Pre-Orders: Please send all orders to dlmannor1975@gmail.com.
We will send an invoice for your order as soon as we receive it.  We prefer credit card payments but will take cash at the time of pick-up.
We will also have veggies available for walk up sales, please check the Friday newsletter!

Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, head lettuce, tomatoes, sweet peppers, carrots, leeks, potatoes, and garlic. Again, each bag will cost $15.
To order your Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
We also plan to have many other items for walk-up sales—watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Also, again this week our market stall will be run by our crew member Forrest. Be sure to ask him about his special hot sauce and other goodies!
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

Vendors attending Saturday September 11th :

Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes, sweet peppers, carrots, potatoes, and garlic.
Be sure to ask him about his special hot sauce!
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC. Our pigs and sheep range on 40 acres in Montague, MI.  The pigs eat certified organic grain (75% corn, 25% soy), are born on the farm, primarily roam in the woods, and get hay and baleage in the winter.  The sheep are 100% grass-fed, are moved daily to a new paddock in the summer, and are also born on the farm.  The sheep are Certified Grass-fed and Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World.
Update: We are still waiting for bacon.  August is the month that most counties host their annual county fair.  Most county fairs are now terminal fairs, which means all the large animals that are showed by the kids must go to slaughter after the fair.  So the slaughterhouse is backed up.  I did not know it would take this long!  Stay tuned.

Vendors attending Saturday September 4th :
Blackbird Farms of Coopersville
Our indispensable crew member Forrest is looking forward to serving up a whole host of delicious veggies for walk-up sales at Saturday’s market!
This week we should have:
mini-roma tomatoes: These little red, ripe nuggets of tomato goodness are perfect for eating fresh out of hand, slicing up into your salad, making up a small batch of pico de gallo, bruschetta, caprese salad, or, what we like to do, slow roast them in the oven and freeze them for use later this winter. (They dehydrate well, too.) We’ve got scads and are going to price them to move, first come, first served.
Jaune Flamme tomatoes: This orange French heirloom is, hands down, the best tomato there is, no joke. Our tomato season is winding down, so get this deliciousness while it lasts.
green and yellow beans: The last succession of the season. Maybe two more weeks and then these are gone until next year. You have been warned.
collard greens
parsley
mini-cabbages, green, red, and conehead
broccoli
red tomatoes
heirloom tomatoes
cherry tomatoes
cucumbers
zucchini
summer squash
sweet peppers
shishito peppers
baby carrots, perfect for roasting
“Nicola” potatoes, yellow-skinned, golden-fleshed
scallions
Looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday morning!

This week at market, we are offering again our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least six different vegetables with a combined value around $20. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $15.
This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: kale, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes, green peppers, carrots, scallions, and garlic.
Be sure to ask him about his special hot sauce!
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

This week’s bag will likely contain some combination of the following: head lettuce, mini-cabbages, carrots, scallions, summer squash, zuccchini, cucumbers, green peppers, tomatoes, and parsley.
